Caen, gateway to historic Normandy

The ideal starting point for your cycling tour, Caen is deeply marked by the history of the Second World War. The Caen Memorial is an essential stop to understand the stakes and the course of the 1944 D-Day landings. The city, heavily damaged by bombing, today symbolises reconstruction and peace. From Caen, you can quickly reach the D-Day beaches via dedicated cycle paths.

Port-en-Bessin and the cliffs of Omaha Beach

Cycling westwards along the coast, your route takes you through Port-en-Bessin, a charming fishing port nestled at the foot of the cliffs. Nearby is Omaha Beach, one of the most memorable D-Day beaches, the scene of particularly fierce fighting on 6 June 1944. The cliffs, bunkers and military cemeteries, notably the American cemetery at Colleville-sur-Mer, offer a moment of reflection and a breathtaking view of the English Channel.

Sainte-Mère-Église, symbol of the airborne landings

Deep in the Cotentin Peninsula, Sainte-Mère-Église stands as a major memorial site. This village is famous for being one of the first towns liberated by American paratroopers. The church, with the symbolic paratrooper hanging from its bell tower, is a reminder of the airborne operation on the night of 5 to 6 June 1944. The Airborne museums provide a better understanding of the crucial role these soldiers played in the success of the D-Day landings.

Cherbourg, a strategic objective and port of the Liberation

Your cycling adventure ends in Cherbourg, a strategic port city whose capture was essential for the Allies to ensure the supply of troops. Its deep-water port, one of the largest in Europe, was quickly restored after the Liberation.
Cherbourg marks the end of your cycling tour in a maritime and cultural atmosphere.

Itinerary

DAY 1- Arrival in Caen

Welcome to Caen, the historic heart of Normandy and emblematic city of William the Conqueror’s duchy. Founded in the Middle Ages and marked by the Second World War, Caen offers a rich and contrasting heritage. Visitors can explore the vast Château de Caen, one of the largest medieval fortresses in Europe, admire the two abbeys founded by William and Matilda – the Abbaye aux Hommes and the Abbaye aux Dames – or stroll through the historic Vaugueux district. The Caen Memorial, a large museum dedicated to peace and 20th-century history, is also a must-see. With its heritage, culture and relaxed lifestyle, Caen is a wonderful starting point for your cycling adventure.

Night in Caen

DAY 2- From Caen to Port en Bessin

Distance to cover: 66km (41 miles)

Starting from Caen, the route first follows the Orne Canal, a flat and pleasant path where you can enjoy the calm waters and passing boats. Along the way, the silhouette of the Pegasus Memorial recalls the early hours of the Normandy landings, a moving and unmissable site. As you approach the coast, the air becomes saltier and the horizon opens up: you arrive at Courseulles-sur-Mer, a lively fishing port and key location in the Juno Beach sector.
Very quickly, the route leads to Arromanches-les-Bains, famous for the remains of the Mulberry artificial harbor, a symbol of the ingenuity of the landings. The site offers breathtaking views of the sea and the beach, as well as a fascinating museum recounting these historic events. You then continue west to Port-en-Bessin, a picturesque little port where colorful trawlers rub shoulders with pleasure boats. With its bustling quays, fish markets, and stone houses, the place perfectly embodies the maritime charm of Normandy, while preserving the memory of a strong and moving past.

Night in Port en Bessin

DAY 3- From Port en Bessin to Sainte Mère Eglise

Distance to cover: 72km or 80km
(45 miles or 50 miles)

From Port-en-Bessin, the day begins by following the coast westwards. Very quickly, the route reaches Omaha Beach, one of the iconic beaches of the D-Day landings. Its wide stretches of sand and remnants of the Atlantic Wall evoke the intense fighting of June 1944. Not far from there, the American Cemetery at Colleville-sur-Mer pays tribute to the thousands of soldiers who fell for the Liberation, offering a place for reflection and remembrance. The route then continues to Pointe du Hoc, a spectacular cliff overlooking the sea, where American Rangers scaled the cliffs to take German positions. The craters and bunkers are a reminder of the violence of the fighting, while the views of the coastline offer an impressive panorama of the Normandy coast. Leaving the sea behind, the route crosses the Normandy countryside, between meadows, hedges and small traditional farms, before arriving at Sainte-Mère-Église.

Night in Sainte Mère Église

DAY 4- From Sainte Mère Église to Cherbourg

Distance to cover: 73km or 88km
(46 miles or 55 miles)

From Sainte-Mère-Église, the route crosses the bocage and marshes of the Cotentin before reaching the east coast of the peninsula. The road leads to Saint-Vaast-la-Hougue, a charming port renowned for its Vauban towers and maritime atmosphere. From Saint-Vaast la Hougue, the route first follows the eastern coastline of the Cotentin Peninsula to Barfleur, one of the most beautiful villages in France. This historic fishing port, with its granite houses and bustling quays, is a must-see stop to enjoy the maritime atmosphere and local heritage. After Barfleur, the route leaves the coastline to follow the valley of the Saire, a small winding river lined with meadows and traditional farms. This peaceful path allows you to discover another side of the Cotentin. You finally arrive at your destination. In Cherbourg, immerse yourself in the lively atmosphere of a large seaport and explore the Cité de la Mer, a fascinating museum about the oceans, submarines and legendary transatlantic liners. Then stroll through the city centre to fully enjoy the life and charm of this Cotentin town.

FAQ

I cycle occasionally: can I manage stages of 70 to 80 km a day?

This tour is designed for cyclists who are comfortable on a bike and cycle regularly, even if only moderately. The stages range from 67 to 88 km, but the route follows cycle paths, quiet back roads and coastal paths, so the terrain is never too challenging. You cycle at your own pace, with breaks whenever you like throughout the day. And if you have any doubts, an electric bike (€185 for 3 days) allows you to cover these distances without straining yourself, whilst fully enjoying the scenery. It guarantees you’ll never feel the strain.

Can we choose between shorter or longer options depending on the stage?

Yes. Some stages offer a choice of two distances: for example, 72 or 80 km between Port-en-Bessin and Sainte-Mère-Église, and 73 or 88 km between Sainte-Mère-Église and Cherbourg. You can adapt your route to suit your fitness level on the day, with no restrictions. The GPX tracks and navigation app provided will guide you along both routes.

What happens to my luggage between Caen and Cherbourg?

You don’t carry a thing. Every morning, Normandie Rando collects your luggage from your hotel and delivers it to the next one. You set off light, with just a handlebar bag for the essentials for the day (water, phone, snacks). In the evening, your belongings will be waiting for you in your room. This is one of the great advantages of a fully organised holiday: zero logistics, 100% enjoyment.

How do I collect my car in Caen if I arrive in Cherbourg?

It’s all sorted and simple. A train connects Cherbourg to Caen in 1 hour 15 minutes, with frequent departures throughout the day. Cherbourg station is a 15-minute walk from your hotel. You can also travel directly back to Paris by train from Cherbourg in 3 hours 15 minutes, without going via Caen. Free public parking is available in Caen to park your vehicle for the duration of your stay.

What happens if I have a mechanical problem or an unexpected issue en route?

You’re never left to fend for yourself. A helpline is available 24/7 throughout your stay. Every hire bike is equipped with a full repair kit: puncture repair spray, spare inner tube, tyre lever and patches. You’ll also have a detailed route book, mapped itineraries and a GPS app on your phone so you always know where you are and where you’re going.

The trip starts at €690: what exactly does this price include?

This price includes 4 nights’ accommodation in a hotel with breakfasts featuring fresh, local produce, daily luggage transfer along the entire Caen-Cherbourg route, a comprehensive road book with detailed maps, GPX tracks, the mobile navigation app and 24/7 telephone support. This is a fully organised trip: accommodation booked, route mapped out, logistics taken care of. All you have to do is cycle. Bike hire and meals are up to you, giving you complete freedom.

What is the difference between the Standard package at €690 and the Comfort package at €890?

The Standard package accommodates you in 2- or 3-star family-run hotels, selected for their warm welcome, quality bedding and generous breakfasts. The Comfort package upgrades to 3- or 4-star accommodation with more spacious rooms, a higher standard of service and tasteful décor — such as the Domaine d’Utah Beach near Sainte-Mère-Église or the Mercure Hotel in Cherbourg. In both cases, the establishments are chosen by Normandie Rando to ensure you get a proper rest after your active days. It is the quality of your recovery that makes for a quality stay.

Are there any discounts if we travel as a group?

Yes. For groups of four or more, a discount of €90 per person applies. Furthermore, if you prefer to carry your own luggage, a discount of €190 per person is available (cannot be combined with the group discount). Departures are available every day, which makes it easier for a group to organise.

Which major D-Day sites will I pass through on this cycle tour?

This route follows the progression of the Liberation chronologically. You will discover Pegasus Bridge as soon as you leave Caen, then Juno Beach at Courseulles-sur-Mer and the artificial harbour at Arromanches. The following day, you’ll cycle along Omaha Beach, pass the American cemetery at Colleville-sur-Mer and reach the spectacular Pointe du Hoc with its cliffs, craters and bunkers. The stop at Sainte-Mère-Église, with its famous paratrooper on the bell tower and the Airborne Museum, brings this immersion in the history of D-Day to a close. No other cycling tour in Normandy covers so many major sites in a single trip.

What are the landscapes like between Caen and Cherbourg?

Diversity is the highlight of this tour. You start along the Orne Canal, in complete tranquillity. Then the coastline opens up with the great D-Day beaches and the cliffs of Omaha. Further inland, you’ll discover the Normandy bocage and its small, hedge-lined roads. The Cotentin offers its marshes, then the east coast takes you to Saint-Vaast-la-Hougue and Barfleur, one of the most beautiful villages in France, before arriving in Cherbourg and its seaport. Every day, the landscape changes dramatically. That’s what makes this trip so stimulating.

Can we extend the trip with an excursion to Pointe de la Hague?

Yes. Normandie Rando offers an additional loop starting from Cherbourg to explore Pointe de la Hague and its spectacular sea views. It’s an ideal option for cyclists wishing to extend the adventure by a day and explore this wild and unspoilt part of the Cotentin.

When is the best time to cycle the Route de la Libération?

The trip is available from April to November, offering a wide window of opportunity. The months of May, June and September combine ideal cycling weather, magnificent light on the coastal sites and reasonable tourist numbers. The high season runs from 1 June to 30 September (supplement of €30 per person). As our partner accommodation providers have a limited number of rooms, booking early ensures you secure your preferred dates and the most sought-after hotels.
