In the land of cider and cheese

une aventure humaine et passionnée

Deauville/Trouville
Beaumont en Auge
7 days / 6 nights
Moderate
From April to October

Located less than two and a half hours from Paris, in the heart of Normandy, Calvados is a department that boasts an exceptional historical, cultural and gastronomic heritage. This walking tour, ideal for the whole family, allows you to discover the riches and iconic sites of this department, from Deauville to Beaumont en Auge!

Starting from the seaside resorts of Deauville and Trouville, renowned for their large beaches and Belle Époque villas, you will stroll through the gardens, orchards and woods of the Côte Fleurie to reach Honfleur and its famous old port, once the departure point for the New World, and now a town of artists that has inspired many of the great names of Impressionism! The last stage of this trip takes you further inland to discover the picture-postcard Normandy: the Pays d’Auge. Its thatched cottages, stud farms, cows and specialities: cider, Calvados, Pont l’Evêque cheese and Camembert! Just what you need to recharge your batteries after a good day’s walking!

This walking holiday offers you a taste of the best Normandy has to offer: sandy beaches and chic villas, charming ports and picturesque countryside, accompanied by varied and gourmet cuisine, all on trails suitable for all ages and abilities!

Deauville/Trouville and the Côte Fleurie

You begin your stay on foot in Deauville, a seaside resort built in the 19th century to welcome the Parisian bourgeoisie in search of the benefits of sea air, sea bathing and a change of scenery. Deauville is striking for its wealth of villas, its grand casino and its racecourse. For nearly 50 years, the town has also celebrated American cinema, welcoming numerous stars every September who immortalise their visit on the famous ‘planches’ (boardwalk) that line the sea.

Just opposite, on the other side of the Touques, you will discover Trouville, its fishing port, fish market and the many shops and terraces of the Rue des Bains! In the evening, Trouville is the ideal place to enjoy seafood specialities in one of the many restaurants in the town centre.

Then, along the coastline towards the Seine estuary, you will travel along the Côte Fleurie. You will pass through the villages of Villerville and Cricquebœuf and admire the gardens, orchards and sandy beaches before reaching the port of Honfleur, the second stop on your journey!

Honfleur, cradle of Impressionism

Located on the south bank of the Seine estuary, the picturesque slate-roofed houses of the port of Honfleur inspired many Impressionist artists such as Claude Monet, Gustave Courbet and Eugène Boudin. Honfleur prospered between the 15th and 17th centuries thanks to the triangular trade and served as a base for expeditions to conquer the New World: Canada, the West Indies and Louisiana. As you stroll through its winding streets, you’ll feel as if you’ve stepped back in time. The old buildings have lost none of their authenticity, with some dating back to the Hundred Years’ War!

Don’t miss the opportunity to take a detour to the Notre Dame de Grâce chapel, which offers a breathtaking view of Le Havre opposite and the Seine estuary.

The Pays d’Auge countryside

After a private transfer from your hotel in Honfleur to the village of Pierrefite en Auge, you will hike through fields and orchards towards one of the most beautiful villages in France, where you will spend the night: Beaumont en Auge! Perched 90 metres above sea level, this charming village with its typical half-timbered houses offers a magnificent panorama of the Touques valley and the Normandy countryside!

The next day, you will continue your discovery of the Pays d’Auge and its rolling countryside! On the programme: stud farms, orchards, and apple juice, calvados and pommeau tasting in one of the many cider estates in the area!

Itinerary

DAY 1 : Arrival in Deauville / Trouville

Your accommodation is located in the centre of Deauville or Trouville, just a few minutes’ walk from the railway station.
Make the most of your first evening by taking a lovely stroll along the seafront and enjoying a delicious dinner in one of the many restaurants in the town centre.

Night Trouville ou Deauville.

DAY 2 : Loop around Deauville / Trouville

Distance to cover : 8.8 km (5 miles)

On this first day of hiking, you can stroll at your own pace around the port of Trouville and the seaside resort of Deauville, built in the 19th century. Over the years, its villas, large beach and numerous shops have welcomed the Parisian bourgeoisie seeking the benefits of sea bathing and the mild climate. For nearly fifty years, Deauville has also welcomed stars from around the world every year for the American Film Festival.

Night in Trouville ou Deauville.

DAY 3 : From Trouville to Honfleur

Distance to cover : 12 ou 18 km (7.5 or 11 miles)

Today, you leave Trouville and head towards the Seine estuary and Honfleur. You travel along the Côte Fleurie on small, winding roads, discovering the charming fishing village of Villerville along the way, where the famous film Un singe en hiver (A Monkey in Winter) was filmed. Further on lies Cricquebœuf, from the Scandinavian names ‘Criach’ and “Buhd” meaning shelter, literally ‘Criach’s shelter’, proof of the commune’s existence in Viking times.

You will end your hike through the woods of Le Breuil. The woods are filled with rhododendrons, which offer a magnificent spectacle in spring. Continue on your way to finally reach the magnificent port of Honfleur.
Your hotel is located in the town centre, a stone’s throw from the old port basin.

Night in Honfleur

DAY 4 : Loop around Honfleur

Distance to cover : 19 km (11.8 miles)

Continue your exploration of the Côte Fleurie by climbing the Côte de Grâce, where you can admire the superb view of the estuary. At the top of this hill is the old Notre Dame de Grâce chapel, which protects all sailors and fishermen. Once a year, the locals climb the hill for a celebration in the chapel. This tradition, which dates back several hundred years, is still alive today. Further west, you cross the Breuil woods again, populated by oak and beech trees, before reaching the village of Pennedepie. The trail leads you to a farm specialising in the production of cider, pommeau and calvados. Tasting is of course recommended! After the village of Barneville la Bertran, you cross farmland before descending to Honfleur.

Honfleur is not a town like any other… If you prefer to stroll around and take the time to discover the port, its narrow streets with buildings some of which date back to the Hundred Years’ War, its museums, art galleries and hidden gardens, we offer several short tours of the town.

Night in Honfleur

DAY 5 : From Honfleur to Beaumont en Auge

Distance to cover : 12 ou 20 km (7.5 or 12.4 miles)

At the start of the day, we will pick you up after breakfast and drive you to the starting point of your tour (a 30-minute drive). Depending on your fitness level and preferences, you can choose your starting point: Pont l’Evêque, with its lively town centre and famous cheese, or the village of Pierrefitte, located further south in the heart of the countryside! You will head west through the typical villages of the Pays d’Auge before reaching Beaumont-en-Auge, perched 90 metres above sea level and overlooking the Touques valley and the Pays d’Auge countryside.

Night in Beaumont en Auge

DAY 6 : Loop around Beaumont en Auge

Distance to cover : 22 km (13.6 miles)

Today, we suggest a loop to the village of Beaumont, where you can explore the rolling countryside of the Pays d’Auge, with its countless stud farms, orchards and half-timbered houses! FAQ

Do you need to be an experienced hiker to complete this walking route?

The trip is classified as a “moderate challenge” due to a few hilly sections in the Pays d’Auge, but the daily distances are among the shortest in the catalogue. Day 2: 8.8 km (Deauville–Trouville loop). Day 3: 12 or 18 km (Trouville to Honfleur). Day 4: 19 km loop (around Honfleur). Day 5: 12 or 20 km (transfer then walk to Beaumont-en-Auge). Day 6: 22 km loop (countryside of the Pays d’Auge). These are walks of 2 to 5 hours a day, leaving plenty of time for sightseeing, tastings and simply taking in the scenery. The terrain alternates between coastal paths, wooded trails and small, undulating country lanes. If you are able to walk for 3 to 4 hours at your own pace with breaks, this trip is for you.

How does this tour differ from the 8-day ‘From the Côte Fleurie to the D-Day beaches’ holiday?

Both holidays start in the same way: two nights in Deauville/Trouville and two nights in Honfleur, with the same coastal stops (Villerville, Cricquebœuf, Bois du Breuil, Honfleur). The difference lies in what comes after Honfleur. The 8-day tour leaves Honfleur for the D-Day beaches (Arromanches, Omaha Beach, Bayeux). This tour stays inland and delves into the countryside of the Pays d’Auge (Beaumont-en-Auge, stud farms, orchards, cider farms). If you’re looking to explore the legacy of D-Day after the Côte Fleurie, choose the 8-day tour for €970. If you prefer local produce, cider, calvados and Norman cheeses in a rural setting, this ‘In the Land of Cider and Cheese’ holiday at €660 is the ideal choice.

What are the highlights of each stage?

Day 1: arrival in Deauville or Trouville, a stroll along the seafront, first dinner overlooking Trouville harbour or on the Deauville boardwalk.
Day 2: a gentle 8.8 km loop between Trouville (fishing harbour, fishmongers, shops on Rue des Bains) and Deauville (Belle Époque villas, casino, boardwalk of the American Film Festival).
Day 3: the Côte Fleurie on foot via Villerville (fishing village where ‘Un singe en hiver’ was filmed), Cricquebœuf (a hamlet of Viking origin), the Bois du Breuil and their rhododendrons, arriving at Honfleur harbour.
Day 4: a loop around Honfleur taking in the Côte de Grâce and its view of the estuary, the Notre-Dame de Grâce chapel, the oak and beech woods, a cider farm with tasting of cider, pommeau and calvados, and the village of Pennedepie.
Day 5: transfer by car followed by a walk through the typical villages of the Pays d’Auge, arriving at Beaumont-en-Auge, perched 90 metres above the valley with a magnificent view over the Touques valley.
Day 6: a loop through the rolling countryside of the Pays d’Auge with its stud farms, orchards, half-timbered houses and cider farms open for tastings. Six days of beaches, harbours, woods and countryside, washed down with cider and calvados.

Is this holiday really focused on Normandy’s cuisine?

It is the most gourmet tour in the catalogue. The title ‘In the land of cider and cheese’ perfectly sums up what it promises. In Trouville (Days 1 and 2), the fishing harbour provides mussels, prawns and fresh fish. In Honfleur (Days 3 and 4), the restaurants in the Vieux Bassin offer seafood and Normandy cuisine, and the Day 4 loop takes you to a cider farm with tastings of cider, pommeau and calvados. In Beaumont-en-Auge (Days 5 and 6), you are in the heart of the Pays d’Auge, the birthplace of Pont-l’Évêque, Camembert and Livarot. The Day 6 loop takes you through cider estates that open their doors for tastings. If you choose to start from Pont-l’Évêque on Day 5, you can sample the eponymous cheese in its village of origin. Every day is an immersion in the Normandy countryside.

Is Beaumont-en-Auge really worth two nights?

It is one of the region’s most beautiful villages and an exceptional base camp for exploring the Pays d’Auge on foot. Perched 90 metres above the valley, Beaumont-en-Auge offers a magnificent panorama of the Touques valley and the Normandy countryside. Its typical half-timbered houses, peaceful atmosphere and local restaurants make it a place where time seems to stand still. In the evening, once the passing hikers have moved on, the village regains a rare calm. Two nights allow you to fully enjoy this atmosphere and devote Day 6 to a long 22 km loop through the stud farms, orchards and cider-producing estates of the Pays d’Auge, without having to change accommodation.

Can you go swimming during the trip?

Yes, on the first two days. Deauville and Trouville (Days 1 and 2) offer long beaches of fine sand, and the first day’s walk (8.8 km) is short enough to leave the whole afternoon free for the beach. The Côte Fleurie between Trouville and Honfleur (Day 3) also runs alongside accessible beaches. From Day 5 onwards, the route leaves the coast for the countryside of the Pays d’Auge, where the atmosphere shifts towards tastings and contemplating the rural landscapes.

How do the luggage and transfer arrangements work?

Normandie Rando transfers your luggage between each stage. The base camp format (2 nights at each stage) simplifies logistics as only two main luggage transfers are required (from Deauville/Trouville to Honfleur, then from Honfleur to Beaumont). On Day 5, a car transfer (around 30 minutes) takes you from Honfleur to the starting point of your walk in the Pays d’Auge (Pont-l’Évêque or Pierrefitte-en-Auge depending on the option chosen). On the final day, a transfer is included from Beaumont-en-Auge to Pont-l’Évêque station. GPX tracks and a mobile navigation app guide you on each stage.

How do I get to Deauville and leave from Beaumont-en-Auge?

Deauville is accessible by direct train from Paris Saint-Lazare in around 2 hours 10 minutes. Your accommodation is a few minutes’ walk from the station. Free parking is available on Trouville beach. On the return journey, a transfer included in the price takes you from Beaumont-en-Auge to Pont-l’Évêque station, from where a direct train to Paris takes around 2 hours. This is one of the simplest routes in terms of return logistics: two stations with good connections from Paris, transfers included, no complications.

What does the €660 per person price for the Standard package include?

The price includes 6 nights in hotels with breakfasts featuring fresh, local produce, luggage transfers between each stage, a car transfer on Day 5 between Honfleur and the start of the walk, the transfer on the final day between Beaumont and Pont-l’Évêque, GPX tracks, access to the mobile navigation app and detailed route descriptions with tips. On a per-night basis, this works out at €110 per person all-inclusive: accommodation, breakfast, transfers, luggage logistics and guiding. For a 7-day stay covering Deauville, Honfleur and the Pays d’Auge, with two private transfers included, this represents remarkable value for money.

What is the difference between the Standard package at €660 and the Comfort package at €760?

The Standard package offers family-run 2- or 3-star hotels: the Hôtel de la Côte Fleurie or Le Chantilly in Deauville/Trouville, the Hôtel du Dauphin in Honfleur (3-star in the town centre), and Le P’tit Beaumont in Beaumont-en-Auge (2-star, charming village atmosphere). The Comfort package enhances the experience with the Hostellerie du Vallon in Trouville (4-star) and the Hôtel Le Cheval Blanc in Honfleur (3-star, a boutique hotel overlooking the Vieux Bassin). The €100 difference is spread over 6 nights, amounting to approximately €17 more per night. The two nights in Trouville in a 4-star hotel and the two nights at the Cheval Blanc overlooking Honfleur harbour transform the comfort of the base camps and enhance the enjoyment of each evening.

Is there a high season surcharge?

No. The rate is the same at €660 from April to October, with no surcharge. Departures are available every day except Fridays and Saturdays (a €60 surcharge applies on those days). For groups of 4 or more, a €20 discount per person applies. If you prefer to carry your own luggage, a €20 discount per person is available (cannot be combined with the group discount). The absence of a high-season surcharge on a holiday including Deauville and Honfleur, two of Normandy’s most popular destinations, is a notable advantage.

Is this holiday suitable for a family or a group of friends?

The page explicitly presents it as an ideal tour for the whole family. The very short distances (8.8 to 22 km), the base camp format (no daily change of accommodation), the variety of settings (beach, harbour, woods, countryside) and the culinary aspect (tastings open to children with apple juice, and to adults with calvados) make this a holiday suitable for everyone. For groups of friends, the focus on fine dining and evenings out in Trouville, Honfleur and Beaumont create a natural sense of conviviality. For couples, the romantic setting of Honfleur and the panoramic views from Beaumont offer truly special moments.

When is the best time for this holiday in the land of cider and cheese?

The holiday is available from April to October. Spring (April–May) brings rhododendrons in bloom in the Breuil woods between Trouville and Honfleur, apple trees in bloom in the Pays d’Auge, and soft light over the Vieux Bassin in Honfleur. Summer is the perfect time to enjoy the beaches of Deauville and Trouville. Autumn (September–October) is apple and harvest season in the Pays d’Auge: this is when the cider farms are at their busiest and the tastings are at their best. Accommodation in Honfleur and Deauville fills up quickly during the season. Booking in advance is recommended.

How to book this walking holiday in the land of cider and cheese?

Fill in a quote request directly on the holiday page.
