D-Day express

une aventure humaine et passionnée

Bayeux
Carentan
5 days / 4 nights
Moderate
From March to November

6 June 1944 was a turning point in the history of the Second World War, with the landing on the beaches of Calvados of thousands of Allied soldiers who came to liberate Europe from Nazi rule. The fighting that took place on that day and in the months that followed left a deep mark on Normandy.

This cycling holiday takes you to the key sites of Operation Overlord, from Omaha Beach to Arromanches, Pointe du Hoc and Sainte Mère Eglise. A sporting and commemorative journey that will delight history buffs and also allow you to discover the richness of Normandy’s landscapes and gastronomy!

From Bayeux to the D-Day beaches

Bayeux will be the starting point for your cycling adventure in Normandy. Take the opportunity to admire its unmissable Tapestry and take a stroll through the historic heart of the town, the Allied quarter after the landings.

The next day, head for the D-Day beaches. The longer route takes you to Juno Beach in Courseulles-sur-Mer, in the Canadian sector, while the shorter option takes you to the remains of the artificial port of Arromanches.

After a second night in Bayeux, head west through the Bessin countryside to Colleville-sur-Mer and Omaha Beach.

Cycling tour through the Normandy countryside

On the same day, you will travel through the famous Normandy countryside, followed by a visit to the German cemetery at La Cambe and a bike ride in the Cotentin Marshes Natural Park. You will end the day with a night in Carentan.

The next day, from the Regional Park, you will travel to Utah Beach and Sainte-Mère-Église. On the night of 5 to 6 June 1944, American paratroopers rained down on the town. The mannequin on the church tower reminds us of these events.
You end your day cycling by the sea, where you can enjoy a swim before returning to Carentan. A longer route takes you to Quinéville along the coast.

Itinerary

DAY 1: Arrival in Bayeux

Bayeux was one of the first French towns to be liberated by the Allies on 7 June 1944. Having escaped bombing, it is one of the few towns in the area to have preserved its medieval monuments.
So take some time to visit:
The Tapestry recounting the epic story of William the Conqueror in England in 1066
The cathedral built in honour of William
The old buildings in the historic centre
(The Bayeux Tapestry Museum is currently closed for renovation for two years. It is scheduled to reopen in October 2027).
For foodies, the town is full of excellent restaurants!

Night in Bayeux

DAY 2: Loop to Gold Beach and Juno Beach

Distance to cover: 28km, 46km or 62km (17, 29 or 39 miles)

On this first day of cycling, you will complete a loop north-east of Bayeux for an initial visit to the D-Day beaches.
You will reach the coast at Longues-sur-Mer, where you can visit the German battery bunkers. A major part of the Atlantic Wall, the Longues-sur-Mer coastal defence battery includes a firing command post and four casemates, each housing a 150mm artillery piece. You will then cycle east along Gold Beach to Arromanches, where you can still see the remains of the artificial harbour ‘Mulberry B’. The long option takes you to the Canadian sector of Juno Beach in Courseulles-sur-Mer. This is also the beach where Charles de Gaulle landed on 14 June 1944!
You return leisurely to Bayeux along small roads, discovering Bessin along the way.

Night in Bayeux.

DAY 3: From Bayeux to Carentan

Distance to cover: 64km or 74km (40 or 46 miles)

After leaving Bayeux, you will cross the Bessin countryside to reach the coast at Colleville-sur-Mer. Since 1956, this village at the eastern end of Omaha Beach has been home to the remains of 9,387 soldiers buried in the American Cemetery. After your visit, you will follow the beaches of Omaha to the west and continue to Pointe du Hoc, where the Rangers stormed the German artillery positions at the top of the cliff.
You then leave the coast for the famous Normandy Bocage, the scene of painful fighting between American GIs and German soldiers. After a visit to the German cemetery at La Cambe, you cross the Cotentin Marshes Natural Park before reaching Carentan. Your accommodation is ideally located in the town centre.

Night in Carentan.

DAY 4: Loop to UTAH BEACH

Distance to cover: 52 km or 70 km (32 or 44 miles)

You enter the Cotentin Regional Park and take quiet roads to reach Utah Beach and Sainte Mère Église. Don’t miss the highly informative Airborne Museum. Spread across five buildings, the museum guides you in the footsteps of the American paratroopers on D-Day.
If the weather permits, don’t forget your swimsuit so you can enjoy the beautiful beaches this region has to offer.
The longer option takes you to the village of Quinéville, following the D-Day beaches.

Night in Carentan.

DAY 5: Carentan

End of the tour in Carentan after breakfast.
Option to organise an extra day of cycling to return to Bayeux.

FAQ

What level of fitness is required for this 3-day D-Day Express cycle tour?

The tour is classified as a “moderate challenge”, a step up from a leisurely ride. Day 2 offers a choice of 28, 46 or 62 km loops starting from Bayeux, allowing you to pace yourself from the very first day. Day 3 is the longest and most intense stage: 64 or 74 km from Bayeux to Carentan, passing through Omaha Beach, the American cemetery, Pointe du Hoc and the Normandy countryside. Day 4 offers a loop of 52 or 70 km from Carentan to Utah Beach and Sainte-Mère-Église. The terrain alternates between flat coastline, the rolling countryside of the Bessin and the quiet roads of the Cotentin Marshes Nature Reserve. An electric bike (€175 for 3 days) is available to tackle the Day 3 stage with complete peace of mind.

What is the difference between the D-Day Express and the 6-day ‘Normandy June 44’ tour?

Both tours cover the same D-Day sites: Gold Beach, Juno Beach, Omaha Beach, Pointe du Hoc, Utah Beach and Sainte-Mère-Église. The difference lies in the format. “Normandy June ’44” spans 6 days, including 4 days of cycling with short loops from base camps, a gentle pace (classified as “leisurely”) and a price of €600. The “D-Day Express” condenses the same experience into 5 days and 3 days of cycling, with a slightly more vigorous pace (classified as “a bit of a challenge”) and a price of €470. If you have a week and want to take your time with the visits, choose “Normandy June ’44”. If you prefer a short, intensive tour that can be completed over a long weekend, the D-Day Express is the ideal choice.

Which major D-Day sites will I visit on this tour?

Over 3 days of cycling, you’ll pass through the four major sectors of D-Day. Day 2: the German battery at Longues-sur-Mer with its intact bunkers, the remains of the Mulberry artificial harbour at Arromanches (Gold Beach), and as an optional extension, Juno Beach at Courseulles-sur-Mer, the Canadian sector where General de Gaulle landed on 14 June 1944. Day 3: the American cemetery at Colleville-sur-Mer and its 9,387 white crosses facing the sea, Omaha Beach, Pointe du Hoc where the Rangers scaled the cliffs, the German cemetery at La Cambe and the Cotentin marshes. Day 4: Utah Beach, Sainte-Mère-Église and the Airborne Museum, which traces the American paratroopers’ operation. This is the essence of D-Day condensed into three days.

What are the highlights of each stage?

Day 1: arrival in Bayeux, one of the first towns liberated on 7 June 1944; a self-guided tour of the cathedral, the medieval centre spared from the bombing, and the town’s gourmet restaurants.
Day 2: a loop to the coast featuring the Longues-sur-Mer battery, the impressive remains of the artificial harbour at Arromanches visible from the beach, and, as an optional extension, the Canadian sector of Juno Beach at Courseulles-sur-Mer. Return to Bayeux via the back roads of the Bessin region.
Day 3: the most intense and moving day of the trip. A drive through the bocage to Omaha Beach, a moment of reflection at the American cemetery in Colleville-sur-Mer, the craters and bunkers at Pointe du Hoc, the German cemetery at La Cambe, then into the Cotentin marshes as far as Carentan.
Day 4: the peaceful roads of the Cotentin Nature Park, Utah Beach and its museum, Sainte-Mère-Église with the symbolic paratrooper on the bell tower and the Airborne Museum, opportunity for a swim and, as an optional extension, a drive along the coast to Quinéville. Four days, four facets of the D-Day landings.

Is the American cemetery at Colleville-sur-Mer part of the route?

Yes, it is one of the most memorable moments of Day 3. After crossing the Bessin countryside, the route takes you to Colleville-sur-Mer, at the eastern end of Omaha Beach. The American cemetery is the final resting place of 9,387 soldiers who fell during the D-Day landings and the fighting that followed. The perfectly aligned white crosses overlook the beach and face the vast expanse of the English Channel. It is a place of silence and reflection that lends a profoundly human dimension to the entire trip. The route then continues along Omaha Beach towards Pointe du Hoc.

Is this trip suitable if I want to take the time to visit the museums?

The itinerary is more condensed than ‘Normandy June ’44’, but it allows time for the most important visits. Day 1 is entirely free to visit Bayeux. Day 2 is a loop starting from Bayeux with three distance options (28, 46 or 62 km): by choosing the short route, you can spend several hours at the Arromanches Museum and the Longues-sur-Mer battery. On Day 4, the loop from Carentan to Utah Beach and Sainte-Mère-Église gives you time to visit the Airborne Museum, whose five immersive buildings are worth two to three hours. Day 3 covers the most kilometres, but the American cemetery and Pointe du Hoc can be visited freely and quickly en route.

Can we go swimming during this trip?

Yes. The D-Day beaches are also magnificent beaches with fine sand. On Day 2, Gold Beach and Juno Beach offer vast stretches of accessible beach. On Day 3, Omaha Beach is a great spot for a swim. And on Day 4, the beaches around Utah Beach and Quinéville (on the extended route) are ideal for a swim after your visits. As the distances can be adjusted each day, you can tailor your itinerary to free up some time at the end of the day.

What Normandy specialities can we try along the way?

Bayeux (Days 1 and 2) is brimming with excellent restaurants where Normandy cuisine takes centre stage. The Normandy bocage landscape you’ll pass through on Day 3 offers traditional countryside scenery: meadows, hedgerows and dairy farms. Carentan (Days 3 and 4) is the gateway to the Cotentin Marshes Nature Reserve, a region renowned for its local produce. The page also mentions the oysters farmed in the Baie des Veys, near Isigny-sur-Mer. Over five days, the cycle route naturally leads you to the flavours of Normandy, between two memorial sites.

How do the luggage and guiding arrangements work?

Normandie Rando transfers your luggage between each stage. On this tour, the format further simplifies logistics: you spend 2 nights in Bayeux (Days 1 and 2) and 2 nights in Carentan (Days 3 and 4), meaning you only have to unpack twice. A comprehensive route book with mapped routes, GPX tracks and a mobile navigation app will guide you along each route and distance option. Every hire bike comes with a helmet, a full repair kit, lights and a lock. A helpline is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

How do I get to Bayeux and leave from Carentan?

Bayeux is accessible by direct train from Paris Saint-Lazare in around 2 hours 20 minutes. Your hotel is a 15-minute walk from the station. Free public parking is available if you are travelling by car. On your return, Carentan station is a 5-minute walk from your hotel, with direct Carentan-Paris trains taking around 2 hours 50 minutes. If you need to collect your car in Bayeux, the train journey from Carentan to Bayeux takes just 25 minutes. A private transfer is also available on request. As both towns have well-connected SNCF stations, access is straightforward in both directions.

What does the €470 per person rate for the Standard package include?

The price includes 4 nights’ accommodation with breakfasts featuring fresh, local produce, luggage transfer between each stage, a comprehensive route book with maps for all loops and distance options, GPX tracks, access to the mobile navigation app and 24-hour telephone support. On a per-night basis, this works out at around €118 per person all-inclusive: accommodation, breakfast, luggage logistics, guiding and assistance. It is the most affordable D-Day tour in the catalogue, ideal for a short break over a long weekend or a bank holiday.

What is the difference between the Standard package at €470 and the Comfort package at €565?

The Standard package accommodates you at the Saint Patrice in Bayeux (a 2-star family-run hotel) and at the Hôtel Le Vauban in Carentan (standard room). The Comfort package takes you to the Hôtel d’Argouges or Le Churchill in Bayeux (3-star boutique hotels) and to the Vauban in a superior room in Carentan. The €95 difference is spread over 4 nights, which works out at around €24 extra per night. On an intense trip like the D-Day Express, where Day 3 is physically and emotionally demanding, the quality of your night’s rest directly contributes to your energy levels and enjoyment the following day.

Can we add an extra day to cycle back to Bayeux?

Yes, this option is explicitly offered on the tour page. Normandie Rando can organise an extra day of cycling to take you back from Carentan to Bayeux, turning the tour into a loop and allowing you to collect your car without taking the train. This is an option to mention when requesting a quote if you wish for the logistical simplicity of returning to the starting point.

Can we visit the Bayeux Tapestry on Day 1?

The Bayeux Tapestry Museum is currently closed for renovation work, with a reopening scheduled for October 2027. Bayeux remains, however, a fascinating town to explore on the first day: its Gothic cathedral, its medieval historic centre spared from the bombings, its half-timbered streets and its many restaurants make it a rich and pleasant destination, perfect for immersing yourself in the Norman atmosphere before setting off by bike the next day.

When is the best time for this D-Day Express?

The tour runs from March to November, with daily departures. Spring (April–May) offers soft light on the beaches and moderate visitor numbers at the memorial sites. June is an emotionally charged month with D-Day commemorations centred around 6 June. Summer allows you to combine historical visits with swimming. Autumn brings a contemplative atmosphere, ideal for reflection. The high season supplement (from 1 June to 30 September) is just €30 per person. Accommodation in the D-Day landing beaches area fills up quickly, especially around 6 June and during the holidays. Booking in advance is recommended.

How do I book this D-Day Express tour?

Fill in a quote request directly on the tour page. The Normandie Rando team will contact you to personalise your tour: choice of accommodation package, type of bike (hybrid bike at €125, e-bike at €175 or gravel bike at €175 for 3 days), departure dates, an extra day returning to Bayeux and any other options. You can also call 02 31 65 74 08 for a personalised consultation. The quote request is free and non-binding. Starting from €470, this is the most efficient way to experience the key D-Day beaches by bike over a long weekend.
