Itinerary

DAY 1 : Arrival in Bayeux

Bayeux was one of the first French towns to be liberated by the Allies on 7 June 1944. Having escaped bombing, it is one of the few towns in the area to have preserved its medieval monuments. So take some time to visit:
The Tapestry recounting the epic story of William the Conqueror in England in 1066.
The cathedral built in honour of William
The old buildings in the historic centre
(The Bayeux Tapestry Museum is currently closed for renovation for two years. It is scheduled to reopen in October 2027).

For foodies, the town is full of excellent restaurants!

Night in Bayeux

DAY 1: Loop to OMAHA BEACH

Distance to travel: 57 km or 75 km (35 or 46 miles)

We will meet you in Bayeux early in the morning to deliver your bicycles. Leaving Bayeux, you will pass by the Battle of Normandy Museum and then the British cemetery, before crossing the Bessin countryside to reach Colleville-sur-Mer. This village, located at the eastern end of Omaha Beach, has been home to the remains of 9,387 soldiers buried in the American Cemetery since 1956.

After your visit, you will drive west along the beaches of Omaha before returning to Bayeux through the countryside. The longer option takes you to Pointe du Hoc, where the Rangers led the assault on the German artillery positions located at the top of the cliff.

Night in Bayeux.

DAY 3: From Bayeux to Caen

Distance to travel: 52 km / 64 km (32,3 miles / 40 miles)

Follow the Aure Valley towards the sea and reach the German battery at Longues-sur-Mer, the only one that still has firing cannons. After your visit, head east along the coast and enter the Gold Beach sector. Between Arromanches and Ver-sur-Mer, you can see the enormous concrete containers still visible on the beach, ruins of the artificial harbour “Mulberry”. Continue east to the fishing port of Courseulles sur Mer and Juno Beach, the Canadian sector.

You then leave the coast and follow the Seulles Valley and then the Mue Valley through beautiful countryside to reach Caen. Although completely bombed during the war, this dynamic student city nevertheless has a rich medieval heritage with the castle of William the Conqueror, the Vaugueux district and the many churches and abbeys in the city centre.

End of the tour in Caen or additional night

FAQ

Do you need to be fit to complete this D-Day circuit in a weekend?

No. This trip is classified as ‘leisurely’, the most accessible level in the Normandie Rando catalogue. Day 2 offers a 57 or 75 km loop from Bayeux to Omaha Beach, and Day 3 a 52 or 64 km route from Bayeux to Caen via Gold Beach and Juno Beach. Each day offers a choice between a standard route and a longer route, allowing you to tailor the effort to your fitness level and the time you wish to spend on sightseeing. The terrain is flat along the coast and gently undulating in the Bessin countryside. Electric bikes (€130 for 2 days) are available for those who wish to focus on the historic sites without worrying about the physical effort.

What is the difference between the three D-Day tours in the catalogue?

The catalogue offers three formats for exploring the D-Day beaches by bike, tailored to suit different schedules. “Mémoire du D-Day” is the weekend option: 3 days, 2 nights, 2 days of cycling, from Bayeux to Caen, covering Omaha Beach, Gold Beach and Juno Beach, from €260. ‘D-Day Express’ is the short week option: 5 days, 4 nights, 3 days of cycling, from Bayeux to Carentan, including Utah Beach and Sainte-Mère-Église, from €470. ‘ “Normandy June ’44” is the full itinerary: 6 days, 5 nights, 4 days of cycling with loops from base camps, covering all four sectors with more time for visits, from €600. If you only have a weekend, “Memories of D-Day” packs the most iconic sites into the most compact format possible.

Which major D-Day sites will I discover in just 2 days of cycling?

The route covers the most significant sites in the western sector. Day 2: the Battle of Normandy Museum and the British cemetery in Bayeux, the Bessin countryside, the American cemetery at Colleville-sur-Mer with its 9,387 white crosses facing the sea, Omaha Beach, and, as an optional extension, Pointe du Hoc where the Rangers scaled the cliffs. Day 3: the German battery at Longues-sur-Mer (the only one still retaining its guns), the remains of the Mulberry artificial harbour between Arromanches and Ver-sur-Mer (Gold Beach), Juno Beach at Courseulles-sur-Mer (Canadian sector), the Mue Valley, Fontaine-Henry Castle, and arrival in Caen with its medieval castle and the abbeys of William the Conqueror. Two days, three D-Day beaches, a distillation of history and emotion.

What are the highlights of each stage?

Day 1: arrival in Bayeux, one of the first towns liberated on 7 June 1944. Free time to explore the Gothic cathedral, the medieval centre spared from the bombing, and the town’s excellent restaurants.
Day 2: departure via the Battle of Normandy Museum and the British cemetery, a drive through the Bessin countryside, a moment of reflection at the American cemetery in Colleville-sur-Mer, the vast sandy beaches of Omaha Beach, and an optional extension to Pointe du Hoc with its craters and bunkers. Return to Bayeux via the small country roads.
Day 3: the Longues-sur-Mer battery and its intact bunkers, the spectacular remains of the artificial harbour at Arromanches visible from the beach, the Canadian sector of Juno Beach at Courseulles-sur-Mer, then the Seulles and Mue valleys through the Normandy countryside, and arrival in Caen, a city rebuilt after the bombings, rich in its medieval heritage. Three days, no downtime.

Is the American cemetery at Colleville-sur-Mer part of the route?

Yes, it is the highlight of Day 2. The route takes you directly to Colleville-sur-Mer, at the eastern end of Omaha Beach. The cemetery is the final resting place of 9,387 soldiers who fell during the D-Day landings. The white crosses, perfectly aligned, overlook the beach and face the English Channel. It is a place of silence and contemplation, the emotional intensity of which alone justifies the visit. The route then continues westwards along Omaha Beach, with an optional longer route (75 km) to Pointe du Hoc.

Does this short format leave time to visit the museums and sites?

The format is compact but designed to allow time for the most important visits. Day 1 is entirely free to visit Bayeux. On Day 2, the choice between 57 and 75 km allows you to pace yourself: by taking the standard route, you can spend time at the Battle of Normandy Museum, the American Cemetery and Omaha Beach without rushing. On Day 3, the route is a straight line from Bayeux to Caen, but the Longues-sur-Mer battery, Arromanches and Juno Beach can naturally be visited en route, without any detours. The open-air memorial sites (cemeteries, beaches, bunkers, Pointe du Hoc) do not require a long organised visit: it is by cycling through them, stopping at your own pace, that the emotion is strongest.

Can you go swimming on the D-Day beaches during this weekend?

Yes. The D-Day beaches are also magnificent sandy beaches, perfect for a break. On Day 2, the vast expanses of Omaha Beach are accessible. On Day 3, Gold Beach and Juno Beach offer lifeguard-supervised beaches in season. As the distances are flexible, you can free up some time at the end of the day to enjoy the sea, especially in summer.

What does the €260 per person price for the Standard package include?

The price includes 2 nights’ accommodation in a hotel in Bayeux with breakfasts featuring fresh, local produce, luggage transfer between each stage, a comprehensive roadbook with mapped routes, GPX tracks for the 2 days of cycling, access to the mobile navigation app and 24-hour telephone support. On a per-night basis, this works out at €130 per person all-inclusive: accommodation, breakfast, luggage logistics, guiding and assistance. This is the most affordable D-Day package in the catalogue, ideal for a weekend trip from Paris. Bike hire is an extra: hybrid bikes at €90, e-bikes at €130 or gravel bikes at €140 for 2 days, with delivery to Bayeux and collection in Caen.

What is the difference between the Standard package at €260 and the Comfort package at €350?

The Standard package accommodates you at the Saint Patrice in Bayeux, a family-run 2-star hotel with a warm welcome and generous breakfasts. The Comfort package takes you to the Hôtel d’Argouges or Le Bayeux, 3-star boutique hotels with spacious rooms, high-quality bedding and tasteful décor. The €90 difference over two nights (or €45 extra per night) offers a real leap in quality, especially after an emotional day of cycling between 57 and 75 km. A comfortable night’s rest directly contributes to the quality of the experience the following day.

Is there a high season surcharge?

No. The rate is the same at €260 per person from March to November, with no additional charges. Departures are available every day. This lack of a surcharge, combined with the already very affordable price, makes this D-Day weekend one of the easiest ways to discover the D-Day beaches by bike.

How do I get to Bayeux and back from Caen?

Both towns are directly connected to Paris. Paris Saint-Lazare to Bayeux by direct train: approximately 2 hours 20 minutes. Your hotel is a 15-minute walk from the station. On the return journey, Caen to Paris Saint-Lazare by direct train: approximately 2 hours 20 minutes. If you’re travelling by car, free public parking is available in Bayeux. To collect your car, the train from Caen to Bayeux takes just 30 minutes. The itinerary is designed for a weekend trip from Paris: arrive in Bayeux on Friday evening, cycle on Saturday and Sunday, and return from Caen on Sunday evening.

Can we visit the Bayeux Tapestry on Day 1?

The Bayeux Tapestry Museum is currently closed for renovation work, with a reopening scheduled for October 2027. Bayeux remains, however, a fascinating town to explore on your first evening: its Gothic cathedral, its medieval historic centre spared from bombing, its lively narrow streets and its many gourmet restaurants make it the perfect place to arrive and immerse yourself in the Norman atmosphere.

Is this trip suitable for a couple, a family or a group of friends?

It’s a format that suits everyone. For couples, the historical dimension and coastal landscapes offer an intense and memorable weekend. For families, the ‘leisurely ride’ classification and short-distance options make the stages accessible to children (children’s bikes, tag-along bikes and trailers are available on request). For groups of friends, the physical challenge and the concentration of sites create a shared experience. As departures are possible every day at no extra cost, the itinerary can be tailored to suit any schedule.
