A sporting vacation in the heart of heritage

From the majestic Mont Saint-Michel to the pirate city of Saint-Malo, this walking tour spans centuries of history. A true masterpiece of Gothic architecture, Mont Saint-Michel is of course one of the highlights of your walking vacation. Dol-de-Bretagne, with its cathedral and medieval houses, bears witness to the spiritual and commercial influence of the region. In Saint-Malo, the ramparts tell the story of the exploits of Breton sailors and corsairs. Each stone seems to carry the memory of travelers and builders. This walking vacation is a true immersion in the region’s heritage.

Walking holiday and local cuisine

This walking tour will also give you the opportunity to sample the flavors of Normandy and Brittany. At Mont Saint Michel, don’t miss the salt marsh lamb. In Cancale, the famous oysters can be enjoyed facing the sea, fresh from the oyster beds. In the villages, stop off to try a golden kouign-amann or the famous “galette-saucisse”, a popular specialty found in Breton markets. These simple pleasures reflect the culinary identity of a generous region and will transform your walking holiday into a true gourmet experience!

Hiking along the Way of the Saints, a true spiritual journey

This route is also a pilgrimage trail where spirituality blends with nature. Mont Saint-Michel, a mystical site dedicated to the archangel, marks the beginning of an inner journey. A dozen monks from the Monastic Fraternity of Jerusalem still reside on the Mont, serving as a link between the present and the past. Along the way, chapels, calvaries, and churches recall the fervor of ancient pilgrims. Dol-de-Bretagne was long an important stop on the religious routes of Brittany. Your walking vacation ends in Saint Malo, which, let’s not forget, takes its name from Saint Maclow: a 6th-century Welsh monk considered the spiritual founder of the pirate city. This sacred dimension gives this hiking trail a symbolic and soothing depth.

Seascapes and wild nature

This walk along the coastline reveals panoramas of rare beauty. The Pointe du Grouin offers a breathtaking spectacle: steep cliffs, secret coves, and the Emerald Sea stretching as far as the eye can see. Between grasslands, beaches, and coastal forests, nature expresses itself in all its diversity. The song of the seagulls and the breath of the wind accompany the walker in an atmosphere of freedom. This walking tour is a celebration of living, wild nature.

The small town of Pontorson is located on the border between Normandy and Brittany, 9 km from the Bay of Mont Saint Michel.

FAQ

Do you need to be an experienced hiker to complete this walk from Mont-Saint-Michel to Saint-Malo?

Not at all. This trip is classified as ‘leisurely walking’, the most accessible level in the Normandie Rando catalogue. The daily distances are very short: 12 km on Day 2 (Pontorson to Mont-Saint-Michel), 12 to 20 km on Day 3, 15.5 to 20.7 km on Day 4, 15.7 km on Day 5, and 9.5 to 22.5 km on Day 6 (with several distance options). These are walks of 2 to 4 hours a day, leaving plenty of time for sightseeing, gourmet breaks and taking in the scenery. The terrain is generally flat in the polders of the bay, then coastal and undulating along the GR34 between Cancale and Saint-Malo. If you are able to walk for 3 to 4 hours at your own pace with breaks, this trip is for you.

How does this trip differ from the cycling tours in the catalogue?

This is a walking holiday, an experience fundamentally different from cycling. On foot, the pace slows, the senses are heightened, and your relationship with the landscape changes radically. You feel the salt-meadow grass beneath your feet, the sea breeze on your face, the salt on your lips. The GR34 coastal path, between Cancale and Saint-Malo, is one of the most beautiful walking trails in France, featuring cliffs, hidden coves and beaches accessible only on foot. The pace is also more contemplative: 2 to 4 hours’ walk a day leaves time to visit Mont-Saint-Michel, sample oysters in Cancale, and swim in the coves. It is slow tourism in its purest form.

Is this route really a pilgrimage route?

Yes, the Route des Saints is a historic Breton pilgrimage route. The route begins at Mont-Saint-Michel, a mystical site dedicated to the Archangel Michael, where around ten monks from the Monastic Fraternity of Jerusalem still live. Along the way, chapels, calvaries and churches serve as reminders of the devotion of pilgrims of old. Dol-de-Bretagne was long an important stop on Brittany’s religious routes. And Saint-Malo takes its name from Saint Maclow, a 6th-century Welsh monk regarded as the spiritual founder of the pirate city. Whether you are seeking spirituality or simply appreciate the symbolic dimension of a route, this walk offers a depth that goes beyond mere physical exercise. It is as much an inner journey as an outer one.

What are the highlights of each stage?

Day 1: arrival in Pontorson, a small town on the border between Normandy and Brittany, with its 11th-century Romanesque church.
Day 2: walk along the Couesnon to Mont-Saint-Michel, whose silhouette grows with every step, followed by a visit to the abbey and the village (allow a good two hours). Overnight stay facing Mont-Saint-Michel.
Day 3: crossing into Brittany through the polders, these lands reclaimed from the sea, then the villages of Roz-sur-Couesnon and Sainte-Broladre, arrival in Dol-de-Bretagne with its cathedral and half-timbered houses (dinner included).
Day 4: Mont-Dol and its beautiful church, then the oyster beds along the coast, arriving in Cancale, the ‘Pearl of the Emerald Coast’, for an oyster tasting overlooking the sea (hotel on the harbour).
Day 5: a spectacular loop along the GR34 towards Pointe du Grouin, with its cliffs, secret coves and the Emerald Sea, two beaches for swimming.
Day 6: the GR34 towards Saint-Malo via the Emerald Coast, the sculpted rocks of Rothéneuf, and arrival at the Sillon facing the pirate city. Five days’ walking between La Merveille and the ramparts, at a pace that leaves time to savour it all.

Is a visit to Mont-Saint-Michel included in the itinerary?

Yes, it is the starting point and the first highlight of the trip. On Day 2, you walk 12 km from Pontorson along the Couesnon, the river that separates Normandy from Brittany. Mont-Saint-Michel gradually comes into view on the horizon as you walk. Arriving on foot, after crossing the salt marshes and salt meadows, is incomparable to a journey by car. You have a good two hours to visit the abbey and the village. Your hotel is situated opposite Mont-Saint-Michel, allowing you to enjoy the sunset over the bay and the illuminated view in the evening. Around ten monks from the Monastic Fraternity of Jerusalem still reside in the abbey.

Are Cancale oysters part of the experience?

This is one of the most eagerly anticipated moments of the trip. You arrive in Cancale on Day 4 after walking alongside the oyster beds from Mont-Dol. Cancale oysters, farmed in the bay of Mont-Saint-Michel, are considered among the best in France. Louis XIV had a hundred of them brought to him every day. Your hotel is ideally situated on the harbour, and you’ll stay there for two nights (Days 4 and 5), leaving plenty of time to enjoy them by the sea, fresh from the oyster beds. On Day 5, the loop to Pointe du Grouin starts and ends in Cancale, allowing you to enjoy a second evening by the harbour.

What exactly is Pointe du Grouin?

It is the highlight of Day 5 and one of the most beautiful coastal walks in Brittany. From Cancale, the GR34 trail takes you northwards, overlooking the oyster beds, then the cliffs become increasingly steep until you reach Pointe du Grouin, a spectacular headland facing the Emerald Sea. The view stretches out over the Chausey Islands and the open sea. Two beautiful beaches line the route, perfect for a swim. The return journey along the same path offers different views depending on the tides and the light, guaranteeing new surprises at every turn. It is a 15.7 km loop on a path sheltered from the westerly winds, set against a backdrop of stunning scenery.

Can we go for a swim during the trip?

Yes, on several occasions. On Day 5, the loop to Pointe du Grouin passes two beautiful beaches ideal for swimming. On Day 6, the coastal path between Cancale and Saint-Malo runs alongside several beaches, including Plage des Chevrets. And the arrival in Saint-Malo is at Le Sillon, the large sandy beach of the pirate town. As the walking distances are very short (9.5 to 22.5 km), you’ll always have free time in the afternoon to enjoy the sea.

How do the luggage and transfer arrangements work?

Normandie Rando transfers your luggage between each stage. You walk light, carrying just a small rucksack for water, sun cream and your swimwear. The price also includes taxi transfers on Days 3 and 6: on Day 6, a driver will collect you from your hotel in Cancale and drop you off on the GR34, to make the most of the coastal route to Saint-Malo. GPX tracks and a mobile navigation app guide you on each stage. All the logistics are designed so that you needn’t worry about anything other than walking, looking and enjoying yourself.

How do I get to Pontorson and leave from Saint-Malo?

Pontorson is accessible by train from Paris Montparnasse via Rennes in around 3 hours 30 minutes (one change). Your hotel is in the town centre. Free public parking is available if you’re travelling by car (or a private garage at €8 per night). On the return journey, the direct TGV from Saint-Malo to Paris Montparnasse takes around 2 hours 50 minutes. If you need to collect your car in Pontorson, a Saint-Malo–Pontorson bus is available, or a private transfer can be arranged (€120, €150 on Sundays and public holidays).

What does the €780 per person rate for the Standard package include?

The price includes 6 nights in hotels with breakfasts featuring fresh, local produce, 1 dinner included in Dol-de-Bretagne, daily luggage transfers between each stage, taxi transfers on Days 3 and 6, GPX tracks, access to the mobile navigation app and detailed route descriptions with tips. On a per-night basis, this works out at €130 per person all-inclusive: accommodation, breakfast, dinner in Dol, taxi transfers, luggage logistics and guidance. For a 7-day trip walking from Mont-Saint-Michel to Saint-Malo via Cancale and the Pointe du Grouin, this is a reasonable budget.

What is the difference between the Standard package at €780 and the Comfort package at €900?

The Standard package offers well-located 2- and 3-star hotels: the Hôtel Montgomery in Pontorson, the Hôtel Vert opposite Mont-Saint-Michel, the Hôtel de Bretagne in Dol, the Hôtel Le Querrien in Cancale (on the harbour), and the Hôtel Ibis Le Sillon in Saint-Malo (facing the sea). The Comfort package upgrades to 3-star superior rooms with a view: the Hôtel Le Gabriel opposite Mont-Saint-Michel, a sea-view room in Cancale, and a sea-view room in Saint-Malo. The €120 difference is spread over 6 nights, amounting to an extra €20 per night. On a contemplative break such as this, waking up with a view of Mont-Saint-Michel, the sea in Cancale and the ocean in Saint-Malo adds a visual and emotional dimension that extends the experience of the walk into your moments of rest.

Are there any discounts available?

For groups of 4 or more, a discount of €40 per person applies. If you prefer to carry your own luggage, a discount of €60 per person is available (cannot be combined with the group discount). Departures are available every day, offering maximum flexibility. The high season runs from 1 June to 30 September (€40 supplement). This trip is available from February to November, making it one of the earliest and latest tours of the year.

When is the best time for this hike from Mont-Saint-Michel to Saint-Malo?

The trip is available from February to November, the longest season in the catalogue. Spring (March–May) offers ever-changing light over the Bay of Mont-Saint-Michel and flowering gorse along the GR34. Summer allows you to make the most of swimming in the coves and in Saint-Malo. Autumn (September–October) brings a contemplative atmosphere ideal for a pilgrimage route, with spectacular colours along the coast. Even winter (February–March) has its charm for walkers who appreciate the solitude and the power of the seascapes out of season. Accommodation in Cancale and Saint-Malo fills up quickly in summer. Booking in advance is recommended.
