Saint Malo
Saint Malo
6 days / 5 nights
Challenging
From April to November

Treat yourself to a cycling trip connecting Brittany to Normandy and discover the region’s cities and the history of the men who made Brittany a land of exceptional sailors and famous privateers! Accommodation, bike hire: our cycling travel agency Normandie Rando takes care of all the logistics for your stay.

Medieval discoveries and villages of character

Saint-Malo and its privateer city offer a fascinating insight into Brittany’s maritime history. The ramparts, forts and tales of famous navigators accompany the first pedal strokes of the tour. Each stage of your cycling adventure reveals traces of this daring past, anchored in the stones and panoramas. This living heritage gives the itinerary a unique depth and character.
Dol-de-Bretagne and Dinan reveal an authentic medieval charm, with their cobbled streets and half-timbered houses. The cycle route passes through places where time seems to stand still. Each stop allows you to feel the soul of the ancient Breton cities: cathedrals, small ports and narrow streets. These historic stages offer the circuit an authentic and memorable cultural immersion.

Cycle through exceptional landscapes

Crossing Mont-Saint-Michel Bay by bike offers spectacular views of one of Europe’s most beautiful natural sites. Between marshes, hedgerows and peaceful roads, the cycle route alternates between wide open spaces and unspoilt areas. The often striking variations in light transform each stage of your cycle tour into a picture-postcard scene. It is an ideal route for those seeking a special connection with nature.

Local culture and Breton gastronomy

The Route des Cités Corsaires by bike also invites you to savour Breton specialities: seafood, crêpes, cider and local delicacies punctuate your cycling trip. Markets, restaurants and artisans allow you to discover simple, authentic and hearty cuisine. Each stop becomes an opportunity to meet those who perpetuate regional traditions. This gourmet dimension perfectly complements the experience of this tour.

Itinerary

DAY 1 : Arrival to Saint Malo

Located at the mouth of the Rance River, Saint Malo has long been a coveted location. From the 16th century onwards, the port experienced incredible growth with offshore fishing and the discovery of Canada. Certain names will forever be linked to the history of the city: Jacques Cartier, Surcouf, Chateaubriand, Maupertuis… and more recently Anthony Doerr with his best-selling novel ‘All the Light We Cannot See’.
The hotels that will welcome you are facing the sea and a 15-minute walk from the fortified city.

Night in Saint Malo.

DAY 2 : From Saint Malo to Dol de Bretagne

Distance to cover: 38 or 52 km (23,6 or 32,3 miles)

If you didn’t get a chance to explore the city walls the day before, spend two or three hours doing so before you set off.
From Le Sillon, follow the coastal road between Saint-Malo and Pointe du Grouin. This route offers superb views of the Chausey Islands and the open sea. Between the Emerald Coast and Mont Saint Michel Bay, it’s not uncommon to spot dolphins! Take a break in Cancale and enjoy the local speciality: open sea oysters!
You then leave the bay via small country roads before reaching Dol de Bretagne and its magnificent cathedral.
Our hotel is located in the centre of the pretty town of Dol.

Night in Dol. (dinner included)

DAY 3 : From Dol de Bretagne to Pontorson

Distance to cover: 45 or 57 km (27,9 or 35,4 miles)

We recommend taking some time to stroll around old Dol and visit the cathedral before setting off. Then head for the bay at Cherrueix via Mont Dol. Continue eastwards through the polders: artificial stretches of land reclaimed from the sea. You will witness a rather unique sight!
You will then arrive at Mont Saint Michel. Allow at least 3 hours to visit the Mont: the ramparts, the Abbey and the village.
To get to Pontorson – ‘the real town’ of Mont-Saint-Michel – follow the Couesnon, the natural border between Normandy and Brittany.

Night in Pontorson.

DAY 4 : From Pontorson to Dinan

Distance to cover: 57 km (35,4 miles)

Today’s stage is a journey through deep, rural Brittany.
Far from the tourist trails, head west where quiet little roads will take you past isolated farms, small granite manor houses and beautiful deciduous woods. The terrain is varied and the villages are truly authentic!
Finally, you will reach the Rance Valley, which will take you to the fortified town of Dinan.
This remarkable city is certainly the best example of ‘Breton architecture’ with countless granite buildings topped with half-timbered facades. Your hotel is located in a former 16th-century convent!
Dinner is not included, but we will recommend the best places to eat! Local specialities include galette-saucisse (a type of sausage sandwich) and salted butter caramel.

Night in Dinan.

DAY 5 : From Dinan to Saint Malo

Distance to cover: 34 km (21,1 miles)

If you didn’t have time to visit Saint Malo when you arrived, we suggest a short stopover so you can spend a little time there.
By bike, from the port of Dinan, you follow the left bank of the Rance before crossing it north of Plouër. Cycling as close as possible to the river to Saint-Jouan-des-Guérets, the landscape is absolutely remarkable; it is a real inland sea where sailing boats rub shoulders with artichoke fields and farming villages turn into ports. Now it’s time to consider returning to Saint Malo and the beautiful beaches of the Sillon!

Night in Saint Malo.

DAY 6 : Saint Malo

End of stay in Saint Malo after breakfast or additional night to enjoy the city.

FAQ

What level of fitness is required for this route classified as “Full throttle!”?

This is the most challenging route in the Normandie Rando catalogue, but it remains accessible to regular cyclists. The stages range from 34 to 57 km, which is a moderate distance. It is the elevation gain that justifies the rating: the climb between Saint-Malo and Pointe du Grouin (Day 2), the hilly terrain of inland Brittany between Pontorson and Dinan (Day 4), and a few undulating sections that give the route its character. Day 5, the shortest stage (34 km from Dinan to Saint-Malo along the Rance), offers a gentle end to the trip. An e-bike (€200 for 4 days) is a valuable ally for enjoying the scenery without struggling on the climbs. If you cycle regularly and aren’t put off by hills, this adventure is well within your reach.

This tour starts and ends in Saint-Malo: what’s the advantage?

It’s the only loop tour starting from Saint-Malo in the catalogue. You set off from your seaside hotel on Day 1 and return there on Day 5. This means that if you’re travelling by car, it’ll be waiting for you in Saint-Malo when you get back. If you’re travelling by train, you’ll depart from the same station. No extra return journey, no private transfers to organise, no train to book for the return leg. This logistical simplicity removes one of the most common barriers to touring by bike. You need worry about nothing but cycling, sightseeing and enjoying yourself.

Is this a Breton or Norman tour?

Both. It is the only tour in the catalogue that links Brittany and Normandy in a single trip. You set off from Saint-Malo, the quintessential Breton pirate town. You follow the Emerald Coast to Cancale and its oysters. You pass through Dol-de-Bretagne and its cathedral. You cross the Couesnon, the natural border between Brittany and Normandy, to visit Mont-Saint-Michel on the Normandy side. You return via Dinan, a medieval gem of Brittany, and the Rance Valley. It is an immersion in two distinct regional identities, united around the bay of Mont-Saint-Michel. The architecture shifts from Breton granite to Norman half-timbering, the cuisine evolves from Cancale oysters to Dinan galettes-saucisses, and the landscape changes from the cliffs of the Emerald Coast to the polders of the bay.

What are the highlights of each stage?

Day 1: arrival in Saint-Malo, exploring the walled city, the ramparts, the forts and the history of the privateers (Jacques Cartier, Surcouf, Chateaubriand). Hotel facing the sea, on the Sillon.
Day 2: spectacular coastal road between Saint-Malo and Pointe du Grouin with views of the Chausey Islands and the chance to spot dolphins, a break for a tasting of deep-sea oysters in Cancale, then small country roads to Dol-de-Bretagne and its superb cathedral (dinner included).
Day 3: Mont Dol, the Cherrueix polders reclaimed from the sea, arrival at Mont-Saint-Michel with around 3 hours to visit the abbey and the island town, then the Couesnon Canal to Pontorson.
Day 4: the heart of rural Brittany, isolated farms, granite manor houses, deciduous woods, then the Rance valley and arrival in Dinan, a remarkable fortified town with its granite and half-timbered buildings, overnight stay in a former 16th-century convent.
Day 5: a descent along the Rance, a veritable inland sea where sailing boats sail alongside fields of artichokes, a remarkable landscape until the return to Saint-Malo and the beaches of Le Sillon. Five days amongst privateers, crêpes, granite and La Merveille.

Is a visit to Mont-Saint-Michel included in the itinerary?

Yes, it’s the highlight of Day 3. After crossing the Cherrueix polders—stretches of land reclaimed from the sea offering a unique spectacle—you arrive at the foot of Mont-Saint-Michel. Allow at least 3 hours to visit the ramparts, the abbey and the village. The approach by bike across the bay, with Mont-Saint-Michel rising on the horizon above the salt marshes, is incomparable to a journey by car. After the visit, you’ll head to Pontorson along the Couesnon, the natural border between Normandy and Brittany.

Are Cancale oysters part of the experience?

Absolutely. On Day 2, after cycling along the coast between Saint-Malo and the Pointe du Grouin, the route takes you straight to Cancale, the capital of deep-sea oysters. This stop is a must: sampling oysters overlooking the bay, with your feet almost in the water, after a morning’s cycle along the Emerald Coast. It’s the kind of moment travellers mention first when they talk about this tour. And this is just the start of a gourmet journey that includes dinner in Dol-de-Bretagne (included in the price), galettes with sausages and salted butter caramel in Dinan, crêpes and Breton cider throughout the route, and seafood all along the coast.

Is the hotel in Dinan really a former convent?

Yes. On the Comfort package, you’ll stay at the Hôtel Arvor, housed in a historic building in the heart of the fortified town. Dinan itself is a real gem: it is probably the finest example of Breton architecture in France, with an impressive number of granite buildings topped with half-timbering. Its cobbled streets, ramparts, harbour on the River Rance and galette restaurants make it an unforgettable stop. Dinner is not included in Dinan, but Normandie Rando can recommend the best places to eat.

Can we have a room with a sea view in Saint-Malo?

Yes, a sea view supplement of €50 per person is available. The hotels in Saint-Malo are situated facing the sea, on the Sillon. For the Standard package, this is the Ibis Le Sillon Hotel (3-star). For the Comfort package, it is Le Beaufort or the Hôtel Alba (3-star), with more spacious rooms and tasteful décor. As you spend two nights in Saint-Malo (arrival on Day 1 and return on Day 5), the sea view supplement means you’ll wake up to the ocean twice: once before setting off on your adventure, and once to celebrate your return.

How do the luggage and guiding arrangements work?

Normandie Rando transfers your luggage between each stage during the 4 days of cycling. You set off light, carrying only your handlebar bag. A comprehensive roadbook with mapped routes, GPX tracks and a mobile navigation app guide you from stage to stage. Every hire bike comes with a helmet, a full repair kit, lights and a lock. Detailed route explanations and advice from the team round off the package. The looped logistics simplify everything: the final luggage transfer takes you back to your starting hotel in Saint-Malo.

How to get to Saint-Malo?

Saint-Malo is accessible by train from Paris Montparnasse in 2½ to 3 hours, depending on the train. Your hotel is a 10-minute walk from the station. If you’re coming by car, the Paul Féval car park is a great option for long-term parking (around €3.30 per day), with free shuttles to Le Sillon. The circular route means you return to Saint-Malo: same station, same car park, no return transfer required.

What does the €740 per person Standard package include?

The price includes 5 nights in 3-star hotels with breakfasts featuring fresh, local produce, 1 dinner included in Dol-de-Bretagne, luggage transfer between each stage, a comprehensive route book with mapped routes and detailed advice, GPX tracks, access to the mobile navigation app and personalised explanations of the route. On a per-night basis, this works out at €148 per person all-inclusive: accommodation, breakfast, dinner in Dol, luggage logistics, guidance and assistance. For a 6-day loop tour covering Saint-Malo, Cancale, Mont-Saint-Michel, Dinan and the Rance Valley, with the logistical simplicity of returning to the starting point, this offers excellent value for money.

What is the difference between the Standard package at €740 and the Comfort package at €850?

The Standard package offers functional, well-located 3-star hotels: the Ibis Le Sillon in Saint-Malo (facing the sea), the Hôtel de Bretagne in Dol, the Hôtel Montgomery in Pontorson, and Le Challonge in Dinan. The Comfort package enhances the experience in Saint-Malo with Le Beaufort or the Hôtel Alba (charming, sea view available) and in Dinan with the Hôtel Arvor (a historic building within the ramparts). The €110 difference is spread over 5 nights, amounting to an extra €22 per night. The two nights in Saint-Malo at the start and end of the stay benefit most from this upgrade, with a characterful hotel facing the sea that transforms your arrival and return into exceptional moments.

Are there any discounts available?

For groups of 4 or more, a discount of €50 per person applies. If you prefer to carry your own luggage, a discount of €120 per person is available (cannot be combined with the group discount). Departures are available every day, offering maximum flexibility. The high season is limited to July and August (supplement of €40). Bike hire is available at €140 (hybrid) or €200 (e-bike) for 4 days, with delivery and collection included.

When is the best time for this tour of Brittany around the Bay of Mont-Saint-Michel?

The tour runs from April to November, with daily departures. Spring (April–May) offers gorse in bloom along the Emerald Coast and moderate visitor numbers at Mont-Saint-Michel. Summer allows you to enjoy the beaches of Saint-Malo and swimming at Le Sillon. Autumn adorns the Rance Valley and inland Brittany with spectacular colours, with magnificent light over the bay. The high season is limited to July–August (€40 supplement). As Saint-Malo, Cancale and Mont-Saint-Michel are very popular destinations, booking several weeks in advance is strongly recommended, particularly for the summer period.
