Itinerary

DAY 1: Arrival in Caen

Welcome to Caen, the historic heart of Normandy and emblematic city of William the Conqueror’s duchy. Founded in the Middle Ages and marked by the Second World War, Caen offers a rich and contrasting heritage. Visitors can explore the vast Château de Caen, one of the largest medieval fortresses in Europe, admire the two abbeys founded by William and Matilda – the Abbaye aux Hommes and the Abbaye aux Dames – or stroll through the historic Vaugueux district. The Caen Memorial, a major museum dedicated to peace and 20th-century history, is also a must-see. With its heritage, culture and relaxed lifestyle, Caen is a wonderful starting point for your cycling adventure.

( 23 miles or 28 miles )

Starting from Caen, the route first takes you along the Orne Canal, a flat and pleasant course where you can enjoy the calm of the water and the passing boats. Along the way, the silhouette of the Pegasus Memorial recalls the early hours of the D-Day landings, a moving and unmissable site. As you approach the coast, the air becomes saltier and the horizon opens up: you then reach Courseulles sur Mer, a lively fishing port and key location in the Juno Beach sector. The seaside, with its wide beaches, historical remains and summer atmosphere, offers a peaceful arrival. A gentle, easy day rich in discoveries, between river landscapes, nature and memorial sites.

Very quickly, the route leads to Arromanches-les-Bains, famous for the remains of the Mulberry artificial harbour, a symbol of the ingenuity of the D-Day landings. The site offers impressive views of the sea and the beach, as well as a fascinating museum recounting these historic events. You then continue westward to reach Port-en-Bessin, a picturesque little port where colourful trawlers rub shoulders with pleasure boats. With its bustling quays, fish markets and stone houses, the place perfectly embodies the maritime charm of Normandy, while preserving the memory of a strong and moving past.

Its wide stretches of sand and remnants of the Atlantic Wall evoke the intense fighting of June 1944. Not far from there, the American Cemetery at Colleville-sur-Mer pays tribute to the thousands of soldiers who fell for the Liberation, offering a place for reflection and remembrance. The route then continues to Pointe du Hoc, a spectacular cliff overlooking the sea, where American Rangers scaled the cliffs to take German positions. The craters and bunkers are a reminder of the violence of the fighting, while the views of the coastline offer an impressive panorama of the Normandy coast.Leaving the sea behind, the route crosses the Normandy countryside, between meadows, hedges and small traditional farms, before arriving Carentan, the Capitale of the Natural Park.

Night in Carentan

Here, the flora and fauna are remarkable: herons, egrets, wild ducks and marsh flowers accompany cyclists. You then reach the coast at Utah Beach, one of the D-Day landing beaches, famous for the American troops’ assault. The remains of the Atlantic Wall and nearby museums provide an insight into the history that unfolded here. The west coast of the Cotentin then reveals itself in all its wild beauty: deserted beaches, low cliffs, dunes and fishing villages punctuate your ride. Finally, you arrive at Saint-Vaast-la-Hougue, a lively port famous for its Vauban towers, listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and for its authentic maritime atmosphere.

After Barfleur, the route leaves the coastline to follow the valley of the Saire, a small winding river lined with meadows and traditional farms. This peaceful path allows you to discover another side of the Cotentin. You finally arrive at your destination. In Cherbourg, immerse yourself in the lively atmosphere of a large seaport and explore the Cité de la Mer, a fascinating museum about the oceans, submarines and legendary transatlantic liners. FAQ

What does ‘a little challenge’ mean: what level of fitness is required for this cycle tour?

This tour is aimed at occasional to regular cyclists who can cycle comfortably for 3 to 4 hours a day. The stages range from 36 to 61 km, with mostly flat to undulating terrain. The first two days (36 to 45 km) serve as a gentle warm-up. The ‘light challenge’ comes on Day 4 (55 to 61 km between Port-en-Bessin and Carentan), which remains accessible to anyone who cycles regularly. In practical terms, if you’re comfortable with 40–50 km bike rides at the weekend, this tour is for you. E-bikes (€290 for 5 days) are also available to make the longer days a bit easier.

How does this tour differ from “La Route de la Libération”, which also links Caen to Cherbourg?

Both tours cover the same Caen-Cherbourg route, but the experience is radically different. “La Route de la Libération” condenses the route into 3 days of cycling with stages of 67 to 88 km – it’s a challenging format. “The Path to Freedom” takes its time over five days of cycling, with stages ranging from 36 to 61 km, and adds two extra stops: Carentan, in the heart of the Cotentin marshes, and Saint-Vaast-la-Hougue with its UNESCO-listed Vauban towers. You’ll also pass through Utah Beach and the natural marshes—sites not included in the shorter route. The result: a more leisurely pace, more time for sightseeing, tastings and soaking up the scenery. It’s the same route, but a completely different adventure.

Which major D-Day sites will I discover on this tour?

The itinerary follows the progression of the Liberation chronologically, with a remarkable concentration of sites. Day 2: Pegasus Bridge and Juno Beach at Courseulles-sur-Mer. Day 3: the artificial harbour at Arromanches and its impressive remains. Day 4: Omaha Beach, the American cemetery at Colleville-sur-Mer and Pointe du Hoc – three of the most moving sites along the entire Normandy coast. Day 5: the Carentan marshes (paratroopers’ combat zone) followed by Utah Beach and its museums. This tour is the only one in the catalogue to cover Juno, Gold, Omaha and Utah Beach all in a single trip. For history enthusiasts, it is the most comprehensive itinerary.

Are the Cotentin marshes and Saint-Vaast-la-Hougue really worth a visit?

These are the surprises of the route and often travellers’ favourite moments. The Carentan marshes offer a unique landscape: expanses of water, meadows and reeds populated by herons, egrets and wild ducks. Cycling through this tranquil setting, between land and water, gives the feeling of being at the edge of the world, just a few kilometres from the coast. Saint-Vaast-la-Hougue, meanwhile, is a maritime gem: a bustling harbour, Vauban towers listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, Tatihou Island accessible at low tide, and the famous Saint-Vaast oysters to enjoy by the harbour. Barfleur, which you’ll cross the following day, is listed among the most beautiful villages in France. These ‘hidden’ stops are what set this tour apart from a simple commemorative route.

What Norman specialities can you sample along the route?

This tour is a veritable culinary journey from west to east. In Courseulles-sur-Mer and Port-en-Bessin, fresh fish and scallops are the stars of the menu. In Isigny-sur-Mer, which you’ll cross on Day 4, you’ll find yourself in the birthplace of Isigny butter and cream, both world-renowned AOC products. In Carentan, marshland produce and local cuisine set the tone. The highlight is Saint-Vaast-la-Hougue: its oysters, farmed in the bay opposite the Vauban towers, can be enjoyed right by the harbour. And throughout the Cotentin, farmhouse cider, salted butter toffees and Camembert accompany your breaks. The stages are designed to give you time to stop, taste and savour – that is the very essence of this trip.

What does a typical day on this trip actually look like?

In the morning, you’ll enjoy a hearty breakfast of fresh, local produce at your hotel. Your luggage is collected by Normandie Rando, so you have nothing to carry. You set off on your bike with your handlebar bag (water, phone, camera, snacks), guided by the route book, detailed maps and the GPS app on your phone. You cycle at your own pace, stopping whenever you like for a museum visit, a break on the beach or a tasting. At the end of the day, you arrive at your hotel where your luggage is waiting for you in your room. The evening is free to explore the town and have dinner. Telephone support is available 24 hours a day if needed. Everything runs smoothly, without stress.

How do I collect my car in Caen when the trip ends in Cherbourg?

A train connects Cherbourg to Caen in 1 hour 15 minutes, with frequent departures throughout the day. Cherbourg station is a 15-minute walk from your hotel. Free public parking is available in Caen to park your vehicle for the duration of your stay. If you prefer to return directly to Paris, direct Cherbourg-Paris trains are available in approximately 3 hours 15 minutes.

What does the €850 per person price include?

The price includes 6 nights’ accommodation with breakfast, daily luggage transfer over the 5 days of cycling, a comprehensive roadbook with mapped routes, GPX tracks, access to the mobile navigation app and 24/7 telephone support. On a per-night basis, this works out at around €142 per person, all-inclusive of accommodation, breakfast, luggage logistics, guiding and assistance. For a 7-day trip taking in Normandy’s most iconic sites, with fully managed logistics, this represents a controlled budget compared to organising an equivalent trip yourself.

What is the difference between the Standard package at €850 and the Comfort package at €1,020?

The Standard package accommodates you in friendly 2- or 3-star family-run hotels with a warm welcome, quality bedding and generous breakfasts, such as the Hôtel la Pêcherie in Courseulles or the Auberge Au Moyne de Saire in Réville, overlooking the sea. The Comfort package enhances the experience with 3- or 4-star establishments: the Hôtel du Dauphin in Caen, La Crémaillère in Courseulles, the Hôtel Les Fuchsias in Saint-Vaast-la-Hougue (a local institution), or the Mercure in Cherbourg. The €170 difference is spread over 6 nights, amounting to approximately €28 more per night for superior comfort, more spacious rooms and often prime locations. On a 5-day cycling holiday, this level of comfort makes a real difference to your enjoyment day by day.

Are there any group discounts or options to reduce the budget?

Yes. For groups of four or more, a discount of €70 per person applies. If you prefer to carry your own luggage, a discount of €160 per person is available (cannot be combined with the group discount). Departures are available every day, which makes group planning easier. These discounts make a 7-day trip affordable without compromising on the quality of the experience.

What is the most memorable stage of this tour?

It’s hard to choose, as each day has its own intensity. But Day 4, from Port-en-Bessin to Carentan, is particularly moving. In the morning, you walk along Omaha Beach amidst the silence of its vast sandy shores. The American cemetery at Colleville-sur-Mer, with its thousands of white crosses facing the sea, inspires a moment of deep reflection. Then Pointe du Hoc and its crater-riddled cliffs serve as a stark reminder of the ferocity of the fighting. In the afternoon, the landscape changes completely: you enter the Normandy countryside, with its hedgerows and farmhouses, and arrive in Carentan, the gateway to the Cotentin marshes. This contrast between remembrance and the serenity of nature is what makes this day unforgettable.

Can we extend our stay with a visit to Pointe de la Hague?

Yes. Normandie Rando offers an additional loop starting from Cherbourg to explore Pointe de la Hague, the north-western tip of France. Its wild cliffs, the Goury lighthouse, Écalgrain Bay and the Nez de Jobourg offer some of the most spectacular views in the whole of Normandy. It’s a perfect option for those wishing to extend the adventure by a day before leaving Cherbourg.

When is the best time to cycle the Voie de la Liberté?

The tour runs from April to November, with daily departures. May, June and September offer the most pleasant conditions: ideal temperatures for cycling, magnificent light along the coast and reasonable visitor numbers at memorial sites and accommodation. The high season (1 June to 30 September) incurs a supplement of €40 to €60 per person. For a 6-night trip with 6 different partner hotels, availability fills up quickly, so booking several weeks in advance is recommended, particularly for the stops at Saint-Vaast-la-Hougue and Port-en-Bessin, where accommodation is limited.

How do I book this cycling trip on the Voie de la Liberté?

Simply fill in the quote request form on this page. The Normandie Rando team will contact you to finalise your trip: choice of accommodation package, type of bike (hybrid bike at €210, e-bike at €290 for 5 days), departure dates and any optional extras (Pointe de la Hague extension, extra night in Cherbourg, etc.).
