d’avril à novembre

This cycle route connects Caen to Rouen, passing through some of Normandy’s most beautiful landscapes. From Caen, you travel to Cabourg and its beaches, then along the Côte Fleurie to the port of Honfleur. The route then continues to Le Bec-Hellouin, a charming village dominated by its abbey, before reaching Rouen, the ‘city of a hundred bell towers’, at the end of a pleasant crossing of the Seine valley. A perfect trip to discover Normandy between sea, countryside and heritage.

A cycling route in the heart of Normandy

This cycling tour in Normandy allows you to discover a region rich in varied landscapes, including hedgerows, coastline and green valleys. Connecting Caen to Honfleur, the route follows peaceful cycle paths and secondary roads that are ideal for a safe cycling holiday. Perfect for nature lovers and novice cycle tourists alike, this route showcases the gentle pace and authenticity of Normandy.

Medieval heritage and charming villages

The route offers a real immersion in history thanks to Normandy’s exceptional heritage: medieval ruins, abbeys, historic ports and listed villages. From Caen, the ducal city founded by William the Conqueror, to the picturesque charm of Honfleur, each stop reveals a piece of history. This heritage theme enhances the cultural appeal of cycle tourism in Normandy.

The sea and the Seine as the guiding thread of the journey

The proximity of the coastline makes this Normandy cycle route an invitation to cycle between land and sea. Cyclists follow the iconic seascapes of the Côte Fleurie, with its long beaches, sea walls, seaside resorts and luminous panoramas. The route then extends inland to the banks of the Seine, creating a natural link between the English Channel and the river. This transition offers a striking contrast between the sea and the river valley, making this cycle route between nature and water a complete and varied experience.

A sensory and gastronomic experience

Beyond the landscape, the Caen–Honfleur route is also a gourmet discovery. Cyclists pass through areas renowned for their local Normandy produce: cider, cheese, fish, seafood and local delicacies. Each stop can be an opportunity to sample the local fare or meet the producers. This culinary dimension enriches the experience and makes this cycling trip in Normandy a complete escape for the senses.

Itinerary

DAY 1: Arrival in Caen

Welcome to Caen, the historic heart of Normandy and emblematic city of William the Conqueror’s duchy. Founded in the Middle Ages and marked by the Second World War, Caen offers a rich and contrasting heritage. Visitors can explore the vast Château de Caen, one of the largest medieval fortresses in Europe, admire the two abbeys founded by William and Matilda – the Abbaye aux Hommes and the Abbaye aux Dames – or stroll through the historic Vaugueux district. The Caen Memorial, a major museum dedicated to peace and 20th-century history, is also a must-see. With its heritage, culture and relaxed lifestyle, Caen is a wonderful starting point for your cycling adventure.

Night in Caen (dinners included in the Comfort option)

DAY 2 : From Caen to Cabourg or Beuvron en Auge

Distance to cover : 30 km or 55 km  (19 or 34 miles)

Leaving Caen, you will follow the Orne Canal to the Bénouville Bridge – Pegasus Bridge – which you will cross. This was one of the strategic points of the landings and was liberated by a commando of British paratroopers very early in the night of 6 June. You will then pass through Ranville, the first French village to be liberated.

Continue eastwards and slowly enter the Pays d’Auge, a veritable picture postcard of Normandy! The undulating road will take you through orchards, pastures, stud farms, cider farms and cheese dairies.

You will finally arrive at Beuvron-en-Auge, a small village ranked among the most beautiful in France, before continuing north to the seaside resort of Cabourg (depending on the option chosen).

Located on the Dives estuary, Cabourg is a popular seaside resort renowned for its 4 km of fine sandy beaches and the Belle Époque atmosphere made famous by Marcel Proust. The villas of the upper middle class and Parisian aristocracy of the early 20th century add to the charm of this small town, which is centred around the Casino and the unmissable Grand Hotel.

Night in Beuvron en Auge or Cabourg.

DAY 3 : From Beuvron or Cabourg to Honfleur

Distance to cover : 43km ( 27 miles)

When you leave the coast, you enter the Pays d’Auge, otherwise known as ‘Normandy’s picture postcard’. After passing three hundred horses, two thousand cows and about as many apple trees, you will reach the village of Beaumont en Auge. This is the ideal place to stop for lunch and enjoy the local delicacies: andouillette sausage and cheese, washed down with a glass of good cider!

You will end your trip at the magnificent port of Honfleur. Honfleur is a jewel of art and history. This small fishing port is located south of the Seine estuary. The town welcomed and inspired the pioneers of Impressionist painting: Eugène Boudin, Johan Barthold Jongkind and, above all, Claude Monet!

The town has preserved many monuments from its rich past and offers art lovers numerous galleries to visit. A real gem!

Night in Honfleur.

DAY 4 : From Honfleur to Le Bec Hellouin

Distance to cover : 52km ( 32 miles)

Leave the coast behind and head towards the Risle Valley, which you will reach at Pont-Audemer, the ideal place for a lunch break in the town centre. Then follow the valley, both wild and welcoming, where the waters of the Risle, the woods of the forest, the earth of the paths and the stone of yesteryear come together. Finally, you will reach Le Bec Hellouin, where your guesthouse is located.
Take the time to stroll through the gardens of the Abbey, which was founded in the 11th century and is still home to a community of Benedictine monks.

.

Night in Le Bec Hellouin.

DAY 5 : From le Bec Hellouin to Rouen

Distance to cover : 51km ( 32 miles)

You leave Bec Hellouin via small country roads. You then cross the Neubourg region to reach La Bouille, where you will cross the Seine… on a barge! Finally, you follow the Seine to Rouen via the cycle path.

Your hotel is located in the centre of Rouen, near the cathedral and the Gros Horloge, which are undoubtedly the city’s most popular tourist attractions. The medieval streets of the capital of the former Upper Normandy region are also home to numerous restaurants and shops selling local produce… Perfect for refuelling after a week of cycling!

Night in Rouen.

DAY 6 : Rouen

End of stay in Rouen after breakfast or additional night to enjoy the town.

FAQ

Do you need to be fit to do this cycle tour from Caen to Rouen?

Not at all. This tour is classified as ‘leisurely’, the most accessible level in the Normandie Rando catalogue. The daily stages range from 30 to 55 km, covering cycle paths, quiet back roads and a few hilly sections in the Pays d’Auge – nothing too demanding. Day 2 even offers a choice between a short 30 km route (ideal for exploring Beuvron-en-Auge) and a longer 55 km route to Cabourg and its beach. If you can cycle for 2 to 3 hours at your own pace with breaks, this tour is for you. Electric bikes (€190 for 4 days) are also available to make light work of the few climbs in the Pays d’Auge without sacrificing the fun.

What are the highlights of each stage?

Day 1: arrival in Caen, the ancient city of William the Conqueror, with a self-guided tour of the medieval castle, the Abbaye aux Hommes and Abbaye aux Dames, the Vaugueux district and the Memorial.
Day 2: the Orne Canal then Pegasus Bridge, entering the Pays d’Auge with its orchards, stud farms and cider farms, and arrival in Beuvron-en-Auge, listed among the most beautiful villages in France, or, on the longer route, the seaside resort of Cabourg and its 4 km of fine sandy beach.
Day 3: a journey through the heart of the Pays d’Auge via Beaumont and its gourmet restaurants, then arrival in Honfleur, an Impressionist gem with its Vieux Bassin and art galleries.
Day 4: the inland countryside via Pont-Audemer, the wild Risle valley and arrival at Le Bec-Hellouin, an enchanting village dominated by its 11th-century Benedictine abbey.
Day 5: narrow country lanes, crossing the Seine on a barge at La Bouille, then the cycle path along the river to Rouen, with its half-timbered houses, its cathedral painted by Monet and its Gros-Horloge. Five days, five completely different worlds.

How does this tour differ from the ‘The Seine by bike: from Rouen to the sea’ trip?

Both trips pass through Honfleur and Rouen, but the route and experience are reversed and very different. “The Seine by Bike” starts in Rouen and follows the river down to Honfleur and then Deauville; it is a river and estuary route. “From One Capital to Another” starts in Caen and crosses the Pays d’Auge, the Côte Fleurie, Honfleur, then the Risle Valley and Le Bec-Hellouin before reaching Rouen. This route offers a much deeper immersion in the Normandy countryside—with its hedgerows, orchards, cider farms and listed villages—before rejoining the Seine at the end of the journey. It’s a choice between a river experience (Seine à vélo) and a complete crossing of inland Normandy (D’une capitale à l’autre).

Can we go swimming during the trip?

Yes. If you opt for the long route on Day 2 (55 km), you’ll arrive in Cabourg, a Belle Époque seaside resort with 4 km of fine sandy beach. It’s the perfect opportunity for a proper seaside break at the start of your trip; as the stages are short, you’ll have the whole afternoon to enjoy the beach. Even if you choose the short route via Beuvron-en-Auge, the coast is only a few kilometres away. And in Honfleur on Day 3, the proximity of the sea and the beaches of the estuary extends this maritime theme.

What Norman specialities can you sample on this route?

This route takes you through the gastronomic heartland of Normandy. In the Pays d’Auge (Day 2), you’ll cycle past apple orchards, cider farms and cheese dairies – this is the land of Camembert, Pont-l’Évêque, cider and Calvados. In Beaumont-en-Auge (Day 3), a stop is a must to sample the local andouillette and cheese, washed down with cider. Honfleur is brimming with seafood restaurants and fine dining establishments overlooking the Vieux Bassin. In Le Bec-Hellouin (Day 4), the village atmosphere and local produce invite you to enjoy a leisurely tasting. And Rouen (Day 5) rounds off the trip with its narrow streets full of restaurants and shops selling Norman specialities. Every stop is a culinary delight.

What exactly is Le Bec-Hellouin? Is it worth a stop?

It is one of the most memorable surprises of the trip. Le Bec-Hellouin is a tiny village of half-timbered houses nestled in the Risle valley, dominated by a Benedictine abbey founded in the 11th century where a community of monks still lives today. The abbey gardens can be explored in a soothing silence. The village itself is listed among the most beautiful in France. You’ll stay in a charming guesthouse, L’Atelier de Tess, in an atmosphere that feels completely timeless. This is the stop that many travellers hadn’t heard of before setting off, yet cite as their favourite moment upon returning.

What is the barge crossing of the Seine like?

On Day 5, you board the La Bouille ferry with your bike to cross the Seine. It’s a short crossing, just a few minutes, but it’s a special moment: you glide along the river, facing the chalk cliffs and the villages along the Seine, with your bike beside you. No booking is required; simply turn up at the landing stage. This crossing symbolically marks the transition from the Normandy countryside to the Seine Valley and the arrival in Rouen. It’s a memory travellers cherish.

How do the luggage and guiding arrangements work on this tour?

You carry nothing and you never get lost. Normandie Rando transfers your luggage from accommodation to accommodation every day; you’ll find it in your room in the evening. You’ll have a comprehensive route book with mapped routes, GPX tracks and a mobile navigation app. A helpline is available 24/7 should you need assistance. Every hire bike comes with a helmet, a full repair kit, lights and a lock. You set off light every morning; your only decision is where to stop for a cider or a photo.

How do I get to Caen and leave from Rouen?

Both cities are well connected to Paris. Paris Saint-Lazare → Caen by direct train in 2 hours. Your hotel in Caen is a 30-minute walk from the station (or a taxi ride of around €20). On the return journey, Rouen → Paris Saint-Lazare takes 1 hour 40 minutes; Rouen station is a 15-minute walk from your hotel. If you’re travelling by car, free park-and-ride facilities are available on the outskirts of Caen. To collect your vehicle, a Rouen-Caen train will take you back in 1 hour 45 minutes. A private transfer is also available on request.

What does the €730 per person rate for the Standard package include?

The price includes 5 nights’ accommodation with breakfast, daily luggage transfer between each stage, a comprehensive route book with mapped itineraries, GPX tracks for the 4 stages, access to the mobile navigation app and 24-hour telephone support. On a per-night basis, this works out at €146 per person, all-inclusive of accommodation, breakfast, luggage logistics, guiding and assistance. For a 6-day trip linking the two historic capitals of Normandy via the Pays d’Auge and Honfleur, with fully managed logistics, this represents excellent value for money.

What is the difference between the Standard package at €730 and the Comfort package at €975?

The Standard package offers family-run 2- or 3-star hotels and a charming guesthouse: the Hôtel Les Quatrans in Caen, the Villa Les Mots Passants in Cabourg, the Hôtel du Dauphin in Honfleur, L’Atelier de Tess in Bec-Hellouin, and the Hôtel Le Vieux Carré in Rouen. The Comfort package enhances the experience with 3- and 4-star establishments: the Hôtel du Dauphin in Caen with dinner included on the first evening, the Mercure and its swimming pool in Cabourg, the Hôtel Le Cheval Blanc in Honfleur, and the Hôtel Littéraire Gustave Flaubert in Rouen. The €245 difference is spread over 5 nights, amounting to approximately €49 more per night for a significantly higher level of comfort and character. On a ‘leisurely’ holiday focused on enjoyment and the art of living, the Comfort package naturally enhances the experience.

Are there any discounts available?

For groups of four or more, a discount of €30 per person applies. If you prefer to carry your own luggage, a discount of €140 per person is available (cannot be combined with the group discount). Departures are scheduled for Mondays and Tuesdays (€40 surcharge for any other day). The high season runs from 1 June to 30 September with a €40 surcharge per person.

When is the best time to cycle from Caen to Rouen?

The tour is available from April to November. Spring (April–May) brings apple blossoms in the Pays d’Auge, a striking sight when cycling. Summer allows you to enjoy the beach at Cabourg and the terraces of Honfleur. Autumn (September–October) adorns the Risle and Seine valleys with spectacular colours. As the stages are gentle and the route is classified as ‘leisurely’, this tour is suitable for all seasons. As the charming accommodation options, particularly in Bec-Hellouin and Honfleur, have a limited number of rooms, booking in advance is recommended, especially between May and September.
