The Armor Coast

une aventure humaine et passionnée

7 days / 6 nights

From April to November

Brittany will win you over! It’s not just an advertising slogan. The charm of the Côtes-d’Armor, a department in Brittany, is proof of this. It’s hard to remain unmoved by such a range of fascinating landscapes: sandy or pebble beaches, steep cliffs, coastlines literally polished by the sea, seaside resorts, small islands where you can recharge your batteries… The sea, omnipresent throughout the walk, depending on whether it is low or high tide, can change its mood and transform the landscape in a matter of seconds.

Breton soil

The Côtes-d’Armor is above all the story of the Breton people, who have forged a strong identity over the centuries. Proud of its authenticity and its Christian and Celtic influences, Brittany is a fascinating place. It is a haven where a myriad of bird species and wild flowers thrive, and we are still discovering the extraordinary abundance of its flora and fauna.

It is also a gastronomic region renowned for its specialities such as crêpes, Breton galettes, scallops, cheese and charcuterie recipes.

The first stop on your walking tour of Brittany is Paimpol. This village has a fishing tradition dating back to the late Middle Ages, when sailors made long voyages to the waters off Iceland and Newfoundland. Although many sailors never returned, Paimpol has not lost its fishing tradition.

A paradise for plants and birds

The next day, head to the island of Bréhat, home to an impressive outdoor tropical plant reserve. The hike then takes you to Tréguier, which has the distinction of having the highest density of half-timbered houses. Next, continue on to Port Blanc, the seaside resort with menhirs, then Perros-Guirec, known for its beautiful villas with flower-filled gardens.

The seaside walk ends with a possible visit to the Sept-Îles bird sanctuary, a paradise for birds. In the bird sanctuary, you can admire birds such as cormorants, guillemots, razorbills and gannets up close or through binoculars.

Itinerary

DAY 1: Arrival in Paimpol

The 19th century in the Paimpol region was the era of ‘big fishing’. Fishermen would set sail for several months to the coasts of Newfoundland and Iceland. They were known as “Newfoundlanders” or ‘Icelanders’.
Many ships disappeared at sea, and every family in the region knew of at least one sailor who had died. This era forged Paimpol’s strong identity and the character of its inhabitants.
Your hotel is located near the port.

Night in Paimpol.

DAY 2: The island of Bréhat

Distance to cover: 9 or 18 km (5,6 or 11,2 miles) round trip

This first day of walking can be spent visiting the island of Bréhat.
Head to the Arcouest pier to catch the boat that will take you there.
Once there, lose yourself on the little paths, admire the flora, search for small coves and head north towards the Paon lighthouse.
Be careful not to miss the last boat at the end of the day!

Night in Paimpol.

DAY 3: From Paimpol to Tréguier

Distance to cover: 19 km or 26 km (11,8 or 16,2 miles)

At the start of the day, a taxi will take you to the Talbert furrow, which will be the starting point for the day’s walk. This geological curiosity is a little paradise for shore fishermen. You will then walk along the magnificent coastline to reach Tréguier, located on the Jaudy river.

Night in Tréguier.

DAY 4: From Tréguier to Port Blanc

Distance to cover: 20.4 or 26.5 km (12,7 or 16,5 miles)

Today, the tour of the Plougrescant peninsula will delight nature lovers. The pebble banks, several metres high, are home to remarkable flora, including sea cabbage and horned poppies. In Port-Blanc, you can enjoy a beautiful sandy beach for a refreshing dip in the sea, a stroll to aid digestion or simply a drink on the terrace of your hotel while admiring the sun setting over the sea.

Night in Port Blanc.

DAY 5: From Port Blanc to Perros Guirec

Distance to cover: 16 km (10 miles)

The route to Perros-Guirec is delightful. You will be charmed by the splendor of the seascapes, the numerous villas with gardens blooming all year round with mimosas, geraniums, camellias… And the wild beds of broom, heather, and orchids.

Night in Perros Guirec.

DAY 6: Getaway to the Seven Islands

Perros-Guirrec is a popular seaside resort on the Côte d’Armor. From your hotel, facing the sea and the 7 islands, you may find it difficult to choose:
A morning trip to the 7 Islands bird sanctuary? Created in 1912, you can see northern gannets, Atlantic puffins, razorbills, guillemots, shag cormorants, northern fulmars, and more.
The excursion is by boat (21.50€ per adult).

We also offer a 17km (10,5 miles) loop to discover Ploumanach and its famous pink granite rocks, as well as the more discreet Traouïéros valley and its enchanting world, populated by legendary places such as the Maison des Korrigans, the Auge du Lépreux and the mysterious Trou de l’Enfer and its caves.

One last idea for your final day: relax on the beautiful Trestraou beach!

FAQ

Do you need to be an experienced hiker to complete this walking tour in the Côtes d’Armor?

Not at all. This trip is classified as ‘leisurely walking’, the most accessible level in the Normandie Rando catalogue. The daily distances are moderate: 9 or 18 km on Day 2 (Bréhat Island), 19 or 26 km on Day 3, 20.4 or 26.5 km on Day 4, and 16 km on Day 5. On Day 4, if the distance seems too long, a taxi can be booked the day before to halve the distance. Day 6 offers a choice between a 17 km loop, a boat trip to the Sept-Îles, or a relaxing day on Trestraou beach. The terrain is coastal, with paths along cliffs, coves and beaches, typical of the Breton coastline. If you are able to walk for 3 to 5 hours at your own pace with breaks, this trip is for you.

What is the difference between this walking tour and the cycling version, ‘Les Côtes d’Armor’?

Both trips explore the same coastline (Tréguier, Perros-Guirec, the Pink Granite Coast), but the experience is radically different. The cycling version starts in Guingamp as a loop, with stages of 35 to 62 km combining coastal and inland routes. The walking version is a linear route from Paimpol to Perros-Guirec, entirely along the coast, on the coastal path. On foot, you can access coves, cliffs and passages that are inaccessible by bike. The pace is slower, your senses are more attuned, and your connection with the landscape is more intense. This version also includes the island of Bréhat (Day 2), an open-air paradise of tropical plants, which the cycling version does not cover. If you prefer the sea beneath your feet rather than handlebars in your hands, this is the route for you.

What are the highlights of each stage?

Day 1: arrival in Paimpol, a fishing port with a strong identity shaped by the ‘Icelanders’ and ‘Newfoundlanders’ who used to set off to fish for months off the coasts of Iceland and Newfoundland.
Day 2: boat crossing to the island of Bréhat, an open-air paradise of tropical plants, exploring the narrow paths, coves and the Paon lighthouse in the north of the island.
Day 3: the Talbert Fault, a geological curiosity and a paradise for shellfish gathering, then the spectacular coastline to Tréguier, an episcopal town with half-timbered houses on the River Jaudy.
Day 4: A tour of the Plougrescant peninsula with its pebble beaches and remarkable flora (sea cabbage, horned poppy), arriving at Port Blanc and its fine sandy beach, sunset from the hotel terrace.
Day 5: the coastal path to Perros-Guirec, a delight of seascapes, villas with flower-filled gardens (mimosas, camellias, geraniums) and wild flowerbeds (broom, heather, orchids).
Day 6: your choice of a boat trip to the Sept-Îles bird sanctuary (gannets, puffins, little auks), a 17 km loop to Ploumanac’h and its pink granite rocks with the enchanted Traouïéros valley, or simply relaxing on Trestraou beach. Six days of coastal paths, islands and pink granite.

Is Bréhat Island included in the trip?

Yes, it’s Day 2 and one of the most memorable experiences of the tour. From the Arcouest jetty, a boat takes you to the island of Bréhat, nicknamed ‘the island of flowers’. Tropical plants grow in the open air thanks to the island’s exceptional microclimate. You’ll lose yourself on the narrow paths, admire the incredible flora, set off in search of secret coves and head north towards the Paon lighthouse. It’s a unique island interlude, between land and sea, which sets the tone for the whole week. Be careful not to miss the last boat at the end of the day, as specified in the itinerary.

Can we see the famous pink granite rocks of Ploumanac’h?

Yes, Day 6 is entirely dedicated to this exploration, with a choice of routes. Normandie Rando offers a 17 km loop starting from Perros-Guirec that takes you to Ploumanac’h and its pink granite formations sculpted by erosion, a landscape unique in the world. The trail also crosses the Traouïéros valley, an enchanting world filled with legendary sites: the House of the Korrigans, the Leper’s Basin, the mysterious Hell’s Hole and its caves. If you prefer the sea, the boat trip to the Sept-Îles bird sanctuary is a fascinating alternative. And if you need a rest after five days of walking, Trestraou beach is right at your feet. This is the most free and flexible day of the trip.

Can we go swimming during the trip?

Yes, there are plenty of opportunities. The island of Bréhat (Day 2) offers sandy coves accessible on foot. Port Blanc (Day 4) has a beautiful fine-sand beach, ideal for a swim at the end of the day. Perros-Guirec (Days 5 and 6) is a renowned seaside resort with Trestraou beach right opposite your hotel. As the walking distances are moderate, you’ll have free time every afternoon to enjoy the sea, especially on the shorter days.

Is the Sept-Îles bird sanctuary accessible from the tour?

Yes, from Perros-Guirec on Day 6. The boat trip (approx. €21.50 per adult, not included in the price) takes you around the Sept-Îles archipelago, France’s oldest bird sanctuary, established in 1912. There you can spot northern gannets, puffins, little auks, guillemots, shags and northern fulmars. It is a unique spectacle for lovers of nature and marine wildlife. The excursion fits in with the free day on Day 6, which you can organise as you wish: a boat trip in the morning, a loop to Ploumanac’h in the afternoon, or simply relaxing on the beach.

What Breton specialities can you sample along the way?

The Côtes d’Armor offers a rich and generous gastronomic heritage. Breton crêpes and galettes are served in every village. Paimpol (Days 1 and 2) is renowned for its seafood, a legacy of its long fishing tradition. The coastline between Tréguier and Perros-Guirec offers fresh fish, scallops and seafood. Breton cider accompanies every meal. And the page mentions the Breton cheese and charcuterie specialities that complete the picture. Every stop at a harbour restaurant or village crêperie is an immersion in Breton culinary culture.

How do the luggage and transfer arrangements work?

Normandie Rando transfers your luggage between each stage throughout your stay. You walk light with a small rucksack. On Day 3, a taxi transfer is included to take you from Paimpol to the Talbert Valley, the starting point for the day’s walk. You’ll spend two nights in Paimpol (Days 1 and 2) and two nights in Perros-Guirec (Days 5 and 6), creating stable base camps at the start and end of your trip. GPX tracks and a mobile navigation app will guide you on each stage. Detailed route descriptions and advice from the team round off the package.

How do I get to Paimpol and leave from Perros-Guirec?

Paimpol is accessible by train from Paris Montparnasse via Guingamp, taking approximately 3 hours 45 minutes to 4 hours 25 minutes depending on connections. Your hotel is located near the port. Free parking is available if you are travelling by car. On the return journey from Perros-Guirec, a taxi will take you to Lannion station (approx. €35), followed by a train from Lannion to Paris (via Saint-Brieuc), which takes around 3 hours 30 minutes. If you need to collect your car in Paimpol, a private transfer from Perros to Paimpol is available for €110 (€140 on Sundays and public holidays).

What does the €770 per person rate for the Standard package include?

The price includes 6 nights in hotels with breakfasts featuring fresh, local produce, luggage transfer between each stage, the taxi transfer on Day 3, GPX tracks, access to the mobile navigation app and detailed route descriptions with tips. On a per-night basis, this works out at around €128 per person all-inclusive: accommodation, breakfast, taxi transfer, luggage logistics and guidance. For a 7-day trip covering Paimpol, Bréhat Island, the Sillon de Talbert, Tréguier, the Plougrescant Peninsula, Port Blanc, Perros-Guirec and the Pink Granite Coast, this offers remarkable value for money.

What is the difference between the Standard package at €770 and the Comfort package at €950?

The Standard package offers well-located 2-star family-run hotels: the Hôtel Le Goëlo in Paimpol (near the harbour), the Rest’à Flots in Tréguier, the Grand Hôtel de Port Blanc and the Hôtel de Perros in Perros-Guirec. The Comfort package upgrades to 3- and 4-star hotels: the Hôtel Le K’Loys in Paimpol, the Hôtel du Trégor or the Aigue Marine (4-star) in Tréguier, the Grand Hôtel de Port Blanc in a sea-view room, and the Hôtel Ker Mor in Perros-Guirec. The €180 difference is spread over 6 nights, amounting to an extra €30 per night. The sea-view rooms at Port Blanc and the charming establishments in Tréguier and Perros-Guirec enhance the comfort of your evenings and extend the pleasure of the coast right into your moments of rest.

Are there any discounts available?

For groups of 4 or more, a discount of €50 per person applies. If you prefer to carry your own luggage, a discount of €80 per person is available (cannot be combined with the group discount). Departures are available every day, offering maximum flexibility. The high season supplement (from 1 June to 31 August) ranges from €40 to €110 depending on the accommodation category chosen.

When is the best time for this hike in the Côtes d’Armor?

The trip is available from April to November, with daily departures. Spring (April–May) offers broom in bloom on the cliffs, the tropical plants of Bréhat at their most vibrant, and a virtually deserted coastline. Summer allows you to make the most of swimming at Port Blanc and Perros-Guirec, and excursions to the Sept-Îles when the bird colonies are at their most active. Autumn (September–October) brings spectacular light to the pink granite rocks and a ‘end-of-the-world’ atmosphere along the coastal path. Each season reveals a different facet of this exceptional coastline.
