Normandy June 44

une aventure humaine et passionnée

Bayeux

6 days / 5 nights
Easy
From march to november

6 June 1944 was a turning point in the history of the Second World War, with thousands of Allied soldiers landing on the beaches of Calvados to liberate Europe from Nazi rule. The fighting that took place on that day and in the months that followed left a deep mark on Normandy. This cycling tour takes you to the key sites of Operation Overlord, from Omaha Beach to Arromanches, Pointe du Hoc and Sainte Mère Eglise. A sporting and commemorative journey that will delight history buffs and also allow you to discover the richness of Normandy’s landscapes and gastronomy!

Between Gold Beach and Juno Beach: following in the footsteps of the first waves of the D-Day landings

Your cycling adventure begins on the iconic beaches of Gold Beach and Juno Beach, where British and Canadian forces landed on 6 June 1944. With its memorials, museums and quaint coastal villages, this section of the route offers the perfect blend of history and seascapes. The gentle cliffs, dunes and bustling harbours create a moving and magnificent introduction to the route.

Discover Omaha Beach by bicycle: excitement and spectacular views

As you continue on your way to Omaha Beach, you will discover one of the most memorable sites of the D-Day landings. The vast stretches of sand, overlooked by the hills where the most intense fighting took place, invite reflection. A stop at the American cemetery in Colleville-sur-Mer offers a powerful moment, facing the immensity of the rows of white crosses. The cycle route alternates between panoramic views and peaceful country lanes.

Isigny-sur-Mer: between Norman terroir and memory

Your cycling trip then takes you to Isigny-sur-Mer, a charming village known as much for its gourmet products as for its strategic role in 1944. This is an opportunity to discover authentic Normandy, with its hedgerows, marshes and green meadows. Here, gastronomic heritage blends harmoniously with history, making for a stopover that is both delicious and cultural.

Utah Beach and Sainte-Mère-Église: at the heart of the American sector

The last part of your cycling trip explores Utah Beach and Sainte-Mère-Église, iconic locations in the American sector. Utah Beach charms visitors with its vast, unspoilt beach and fascinating museum, while Sainte-Mère-Église recalls the daring exploits of the paratroopers of the 82nd and 101st Airborne Divisions. Cycling through this landscape of unspoilt marshland and peaceful paths offers an emotional and nature-filled finale.

Itinerary

DAY 1: Arrival in Bayeux

Bayeux was one of the first French towns to be liberated by the Allies on 7 June 1944. Having escaped bombing, it is one of the few towns in the area to have preserved its medieval monuments.
So take some time to visit:
The Tapestry recounting the epic story of William the Conqueror in England in 1066
The cathedral built in honour of William
The old buildings in the historic centre
(The Bayeux Tapestry Museum is currently closed for renovation for two years. It is scheduled to reopen in October 2027).
For foodies, the town is full of excellent restaurants!

Night in Bayeux

DAY 2: Loop to Gold Beach and Juno Beach

Distance to cover: 28km, 46km or 62km (17, 29 or 39 miles)

For this first day of cycling, you will make a loop to the north-east of Bayeux for an initial visit to the D-Day beaches.
You will reach the coast at Longues-sur-Mer, where you can visit the German battery bunkers. A major part of the Atlantic Wall, the Longues-sur-Mer coastal defence battery includes a firing command post and four casemates, each housing a 150mm artillery piece. You will then cycle east along Gold Beach to Arromanches, where you can still see the remains of the artificial harbour ‘Mulberry B’. The long option takes you to the Canadian sector of Juno Beach in Courseulles-sur-Mer. This is also the beach where Charles de Gaulle landed on 14 June 1944!
You return leisurely to Bayeux along small roads, discovering Bessin along the way.

Night in Bayeux

DAY 3: From Bayeux to Isigny-sur-Mer

Distance to cover: 42km or 60km ( 26 or 37 miles)

You will travel through the beautiful countryside of Bessin to reach Omaha Beach and its impressive American cemetery in Colleville-sur-Mer. After Pointe du Hoc, head south, passing close to the German cemetery at La Cambe before arriving in Isigny, where you will spend the night. Isigny is renowned for its high-quality dairy products (butter, cheese, etc.). It also produces excellent oysters, which are farmed in the Baie des Veys.

Night in Isigny

DAY 4 : From Isigny to Utah Beach

Distance to cover: 45 km (28 miles )

You head towards Carentan and enter the Cotentin Regional Nature Park. You will travel along peaceful roads, perfect for enjoying nature and the sea air. You will then arrive at Sainte Marie du Mont or Sainte Mère Église, where you will spend the night.

Night in Sainte Mère Église or Sainte Marie du Mont

DAY 5: Utah Beach Loop

FAQ

Do you need to be fit to cycle this route along the D-Day beaches?

Not at all. This trip is classified as ‘leisurely’, the most accessible level in the Normandie Rando catalogue. Each day offers a choice of 2 or 3 distance options: 28, 46 or 62 km on Day 2, 42 or 60 km on Day 3, 45 km on Day 4, and 51 or 63 km on Day 5. You can tailor your route each morning to suit your fitness level, your preferences and the time you wish to spend on sightseeing. The terrain is mostly flat along the coast and through the Normandy countryside. If you can cycle for 2 to 3 hours at your own pace with breaks, this tour is for you. Electric bikes (€220 for 4 days) are also available for a stress-free ride.

Is this tour the best choice for exploring all the D-Day beaches by bike?

It is the only tour in the Normandie Rando catalogue entirely dedicated to the D-Day beaches. Over four days of cycling, you will pass through the four main D-Day sectors: Gold Beach with the Longues-sur-Mer battery and the artificial harbour at Arromanches, Juno Beach at Courseulles-sur-Mer (Canadian sector), Omaha Beach with the American cemetery at Colleville-sur-Mer and Pointe du Hoc, then Utah Beach and Sainte-Mère-Église with the Airborne Museum. No other tour in the catalogue covers these four sectors in such depth. Other tours that visit the D-Day beaches (such as ‘Immersion on the D-Day Beaches’ or ‘The Liberation Route’) do so as part of a broader linear itinerary. Here, every day is dedicated to the history of 6 June 1944.

Why does the tour operate as a loop from base camps?

This offers a considerable advantage in terms of comfort and freedom. You spend 2 nights in Bayeux (Days 1 and 2) and 2 nights in Sainte-Mère-Église or Sainte-Marie-du-Mont (Days 4 and 5). This format means you don’t have to unpack your bags every evening. You set off in the morning for a cycle loop and return to your hotel at the end of the day. This allows for complete flexibility: if you wish to spend more time in a museum or on a beach, you simply shorten the loop. And if one day you prefer to stay in Bayeux to visit the cathedral and the historic centre, nothing is stopping you. This is the most flexible option in the entire catalogue for visiting the D-Day sites.

What are the highlights of each stage?

Day 1: arrival in Bayeux, one of the first towns to be liberated on 7 June 1944. Stroll through the medieval centre, which was spared from the bombing, visit the cathedral and the historic narrow streets.
Day 2: a loop to the coast featuring the German battery at Longues-sur-Mer and its intact bunkers, the remains of the Mulberry artificial harbour at Arromanches, and, as an optional extension, Juno Beach at Courseulles-sur-Mer where General de Gaulle landed on 14 June 1944.
Day 3: a drive through the bocage to Omaha Beach, with its vast sandy shores, the American cemetery at Colleville-sur-Mer and its thousands of white crosses facing the sea, Pointe du Hoc and its craters, then the German cemetery at La Cambe, before arriving in Isigny-sur-Mer and its dairy specialities.
Day 4: the Cotentin Marshes Nature Reserve, Utah Beach and its museum.
Day 5: an in-depth visit to Sainte-Mère-Église and the Airborne Museum, with an optional extended loop to the port of Saint-Vaast-la-Hougue. Six days to understand and experience what 6 June 1944 was like.

Is the American cemetery at Colleville-sur-Mer part of the tour?

Yes, it is one of the most memorable moments of the trip. On Day 3, after driving along Omaha Beach and its vast stretches of sand, the route takes you to the American cemetery at Colleville-sur-Mer. Thousands of white crosses, perfectly aligned, overlook the beach where soldiers fell on 6 June 1944. The site offers a place for reflection, facing the vastness of the English Channel. It is a moment of silence and emotion that lends a profoundly human dimension to the trip. The route then continues towards Pointe du Hoc, where the craters and bunkers serve as a reminder of the ferocity of the fighting.

Is this trip suitable for history enthusiasts who want to take the time to visit museums?

That is precisely why it was designed. The looped format starting from base camps leaves plenty of time for visits. On Day 2, you can opt for the short 28 km route and spend several hours at the Arromanches museum and the Longues-sur-Mer battery. On Day 5, the whole day is dedicated to Utah Beach, Sainte-Mère-Église and the Airborne Museum, whose five buildings recreate the American paratroopers’ operation in an immersive way. And Day 1 in Bayeux is free to explore the town. The flexible distances (ranging from 28 to 63 km depending on the day) allow you to strike the perfect balance between cycling and historical visits, at your own pace.

Can we also enjoy the beaches to relax or go for a swim?

Yes. The D-Day beaches are also magnificent sandy beaches, perfect for a swim or a stroll along the water’s edge. Gold Beach, Juno Beach, Omaha Beach and Utah Beach all offer vast stretches of accessible sand. On Day 5, the page explicitly mentions the opportunity to enjoy a swim at Utah Beach. As the stages are flexible and the distances short, you’ll always have free time in the afternoon to combine history with a relaxing day at the seaside.

What Normandy specialities can you sample along the way?

The route passes through some remarkable regions. Bayeux (Days 1 and 2) is brimming with excellent restaurants where Normandy cuisine takes centre stage. Isigny-sur-Mer (Day 3) is the birthplace of Isigny butter and cream, two world-renowned AOC products, and its oysters, farmed in the Baie des Veys, are famous. The Normandy bocage, traversed between Bayeux and Isigny, offers cheese, cider and dairy products from local producers. And if you opt for the long loop on Day 5 towards Saint-Vaast-la-Hougue, you can sample the harbour’s oysters right on the quay. This tour nourishes the memory as much as the palate.

How do luggage and guiding logistics work?

Normandie Rando transfers your luggage between each stage. On this route, the loop format simplifies logistics even further: you only change hotels twice (from Bayeux to Isigny, then from Isigny to Sainte-Mère-Église). You’ll receive a comprehensive route book with mapped routes, GPX tracks for each loop and distance option, and a mobile navigation app. A helpline is available 24/7. Every hire bike comes with a helmet, a full repair kit, lights and a lock. You set off light, guided and with peace of mind.

How do I get to Bayeux and leave from Sainte-Mère-Église?

Bayeux is accessible by direct train from Paris Saint-Lazare in around 2 hours 20 minutes. Your hotel is a 15-minute walk from the station. Free public parking is available if you’re travelling by car. On the return journey, from Sainte-Mère-Église, a taxi or bus will take you to Carentan station (around a 15-minute drive), then a direct Carentan-Paris train will take you back in around 2 hours 50 minutes. If you need to collect your car in Bayeux, a Carentan-Bayeux train takes just 25 minutes. A private transfer from your hotel to Bayeux is also available on request.

What does the €600 per person rate for the Standard package include?

The price includes 5 nights’ accommodation with breakfasts featuring fresh, local produce, luggage transfer between each stage, a comprehensive route book with maps for all loops and distance options, GPX tracks, access to the mobile navigation app and 24-hour telephone support. On a per-night basis, this works out at €120 per person all-inclusive: accommodation, breakfast, luggage logistics, guiding and assistance. It is the most affordable D-Day tour in the catalogue, offering remarkable value for money for a 6-day trip covering all the D-Day landing beaches.

What is the difference between the Standard package at €600 and the Comfort package at €820?

The Standard package offers family-run 2- or 3-star hotels with a warm welcome and generous breakfasts: Le Saint Patrice in Bayeux, the Hôtel de France in Isigny, and the Auberge John Steel in Sainte-Mère-Église. The Comfort package enhances the experience with characterful establishments: the Hôtel d’Argouges or Le Churchill in Bayeux, the Normand’Histoire guest house in Isigny, and the Domaine Utah Beach in Sainte-Marie-du-Mont. The €220 difference is spread over 5 nights, amounting to an extra €44 per night. On a trip packed with emotion and sightseeing, the comfort of your accommodation plays a key role in the quality of the experience.

Can we visit the Bayeux Tapestry on Day 1?

The Bayeux Tapestry Museum is currently closed for renovation work. It is scheduled to reopen in October 2027. Bayeux remains, however, a fascinating town to explore: its Gothic cathedral built in honour of William the Conqueror, its medieval historic centre spared from bombing, its half-timbered streets and its many restaurants make it a rich and pleasant destination.

Are there any discounts or options to suit a budget?

Departures are available every day, offering maximum flexibility. If you prefer to carry your own luggage, a discount of €50 per person applies (cannot be combined with the group discount). The high season runs from 1 June to 30 September (supplement of €40 to €60). Bike hire is available at €150 for a hybrid bike or €220 for an e-bike or gravel bike for 4 days, with delivery to Bayeux and collection at Utah Beach included.

When is the best time to visit the D-Day beaches?

The tour is available from March to November. Spring (April–May) offers soft light on the beaches and moderate visitor numbers at the memorial sites. June is an emotionally charged month with the D-Day commemorations. Summer allows you to combine historical visits with swimming. Autumn brings a contemplative atmosphere, ideal for reflection. Whatever the month, the D-Day beaches retain their emotional intensity. Accommodation in this highly sought-after area fills up quickly, particularly around 6 June and during school holidays. Booking in advance is recommended.

How do I book this cycling holiday on the D-Day beaches?

Fill in a quote request directly on the holiday page. The Normandie Rando team will contact you to tailor your tour: choice of accommodation package, type of bike (hybrid, e-bike or gravel), departure dates and any additional options (return transfer, extra night, etc.). You can also call 02 31 65 74 08 for a personalised consultation. The quote request is free and non-binding. It’s the simplest way to experience the history of the D-Day landings by bike, at your own pace, with the freedom to choose the distance that suits you each day.
