The coast of Calvados

une aventure humaine et passionnée

Bayeux
Honfleur
6 days / 5 nights
Moderate
From march to november

In the heart of Normandy, from the medieval town of Bayeux to the port of Honfleur, via the D-Day beaches and the hills and orchards of the Pays d’Auge, come and discover the wonders of Calvados with this 6-day, 5-night break. Museums, charming villages, delightful seaside resorts, rich and gourmet cuisine, all washed down with cider or Calvados, this tour will delight cycle tourists with its diversity!

From the D-Day Beaches to the Flowery Coast

Your cycling holiday along the Normandy coast begins in the charming town of Bayeux. Leaving the town, you will pass the Battle of Normandy Museum and the British cemetery before crossing the Bessin countryside to reach the American cemetery at Colleville-sur-Mer. Your cycle ride continues westwards, where you will ride along Omaha Beach before returning to Bayeux to enjoy the town. The next day, head for the German battery at Longues-sur-Mer before reaching Gold Beach and the town of Arromanches to the east, famous for the remains of its artificial harbour.

Continue your bike trip along the “Mue” Valley to reach Caen, a dynamic student town where life is good! The next day, you will follow the Orne Canal to the famous Pegasus Bridge, before heading back up to the coast via the Sallenelles Nature Reserve and the Merville battery. You will finally end the day in the seaside resort of Cabourg. The next day brings a change of scenery as you cross the Pays d’Auge with its orchards and numerous stud farms, not to mention typical villages such as Beaumont en Auge. You continue towards the port of Honfleur, crossing the woods of Saint Gatien.

The final stop on this cycling trip is the charming port of Honfleur. Located on the south bank of the Seine estuary, its picturesque slate-roofed houses have inspired many Impressionist artists such as Claude Monet and Gustave Courbet. Honfleur prospered between the 15th and 17th centuries thanks to trade and served as a base for expeditions to conquer the New World: Canada, the West Indies and Louisiana. As you stroll through its winding streets, you’ll feel as if you’ve stepped back in time. The old buildings have lost none of their authenticity, with some dating back to the Hundred Years’ War!

Itinerary

DAY 1 : Arrival in Bayeux

Bayeux was one of the first French towns to be liberated by the Allies on 7 June 1944. Having escaped bombing, it is one of the few towns in the area to have preserved its medieval monuments. So take some time to visit:
The Tapestry recounting the epic story of William the Conqueror in England in 1066.
The cathedral built in honour of William
The old buildings in the historic centre
(The Bayeux Tapestry Museum is currently closed for renovation for two years. It is scheduled to reopen in October 2027).

For foodies, the town is full of excellent restaurants!

Night in Bayeux

DAY 2 : Loop to OMAHA BEACH

Distance to cover : 57km or 75km (35 or 47 miles)

Leaving Bayeux, you will pass by the Battle of Normandy Museum and then the British cemetery, before crossing the Bessin countryside to reach Colleville-sur-Mer. Since 1956, this village at the eastern end of Omaha Beach has been home to the remains of 9,387 soldiers buried in the American Cemetery.

After your visit, you will drive west along the beaches of Omaha before returning to Bayeux through the countryside. The longer option takes you to Pointe du Hoc, where the Rangers led the assault on the German artillery positions at the top of the cliff.

Night in Bayeux

DAY 3 : From Bayeux to Caen

Distance to cover : 52km or 64km (32 or 40 miles)

Follow the Aure Valley towards the sea and reach the German battery at Longues-sur-Mer, the only one that still has firing cannons. After your visit, head east along the coast and enter the Gold Beach sector. Between Arromanches and Ver-sur-Mer, you can see the enormous concrete containers still visible on the beach, ruins of the artificial harbour ‘Mulberry’. Continue east to the fishing port of Courseulles sur Mer and Juno Beach, the Canadian sector.

You then leave the coast and follow the Seulles Valley and then the Mue Valley through magnificent countryside to reach Caen. Although completely bombed during the war, this dynamic student city nevertheless has a rich medieval heritage with the castle of William the Conqueror, the Vaugueux district and the many churches and abbeys in the city centre.

Night in Caen. (Comfort category: dinner included)

DAY 4 : From Caen to Cabourg

Distance to cover : 30km or 55km  (19 or 34 miles)

Leaving Caen, you follow the Orne Canal to the Bénouville Bridge – Pegasus Bridge – which you cross. This was one of the most strategic points of the landings and was liberated by a commando unit of British paratroopers very early in the night of 6 June.

Short route:
You then pass through Ranville, the first French village to be liberated. You then head back up towards the coast via Merville. The German battery that was built there is still in very good condition and is well worth a visit. You end the day by following the coast to finally arrive at the seaside resort of Cabourg.

Long route:
Take the country roads, enjoy the typical landscapes and buildings, and discover the picturesque atmosphere of Normandy as you stroll through the village of Beuvron en Auge, one of the most beautiful villages in France.

Located on the Dives estuary, Cabourg is a popular seaside resort renowned for its beautiful sandy beach and Belle Époque atmosphere made famous by Marcel Proust. The villas of the upper middle class and Parisian aristocracy of the early 20th century add to the charm of this small town, which is centred around the Casino and the unmissable Grand Hotel.

Night in Cabourg.

DAY 5 : From Cabourg to Honfleur

Distance to cover : 43km (27 miles)

When you leave the coast, you enter the Pays d’Auge, otherwise known as ‘Normandy’s picture postcard’. After passing three hundred horses, two thousand cows and about as many apple trees, you will reach the village of Beaumont en Auge. This is the ideal place to stop for lunch and enjoy the local delicacies: andouillette sausage and cheese, washed down with a glass of good cider!

You will end your trip at the magnificent port of Honfleur. Honfleur is a jewel of art and history. This small fishing port is located south of the Seine estuary. The town welcomed and inspired the pioneers of Impressionist painting: Eugène Boudin, Johan Barthold Jongkind and, above all, Claude Monet!

The town has preserved many monuments from its rich past and offers art lovers numerous galleries to visit. A real gem!

FAQ

What level of fitness is required for this 4-day cycle tour from Bayeux to Honfleur?

The tour is classified as a ‘moderate challenge’, suitable for regular cyclists. The stages range from 30 to 75 km, with a choice of distance available almost every day. Day 2 offers a 57 or 75 km loop to Omaha Beach (with Pointe du Hoc as an optional extension). Day 3 offers a 52 or 64 km route from Bayeux to Caen via Gold Beach and Juno Beach. Day 4, from Caen to Cabourg, offers a choice of 30 or 55 km. And Day 5 covers 43 km from Cabourg to Honfleur through the Pays d’Auge. The terrain alternates between flat coastline, the Bessin countryside and the gentle valleys of the Pays d’Auge. An electric bike (€190 for 4 days) is available to tackle the longest days with complete peace of mind.

What makes this tour unique in the Normandie Rando catalogue?

It is the only tour that combines the D-Day beaches, Caen, the Côte Fleurie and Honfleur in a 6-day itinerary. The first half of the trip is devoted to history (Omaha Beach, the American cemetery, Pointe du Hoc, Gold Beach, Arromanches, Juno Beach, Caen), then the route shifts towards leisure and the art of living (Pegasus Bridge, Cabourg and its Belle Époque beach, the Pays d’Auge with its orchards and cheeses, Beaumont-en-Auge, and the arrival in Honfleur, an Impressionist gem). This contrast between remembrance and the gentle art of living gives the trip a powerful narrative arc. It is also the only tour in the catalogue to offer a Superior Luxury option with 4- and 5-star hotels, for those who wish to experience this journey through Calvados in exceptional surroundings.

What are the highlights of each stage?

Day 1: arrival in Bayeux, free time to visit the cathedral, the medieval centre spared from the bombings, and the town’s gourmet restaurants.
Day 2: loop to Omaha Beach, including the Battle of Normandy Museum, the British cemetery, the American cemetery at Colleville-sur-Mer with its 9,387 white crosses facing the sea, the beaches of Omaha, and, as an optional extension, Pointe du Hoc.
Day 3: the Longues-sur-Mer battery with its intact guns, the remains of the artificial harbour at Arromanches (Gold Beach), Juno Beach at Courseulles-sur-Mer, then the Mue Valley and arrival in Caen with its castle, abbeys and the Vaugueux district.
Day 4: the Orne Canal and Pegasus Bridge, then a choice of the coast via Merville and its German battery to Cabourg, or inland via Beuvron-en-Auge, one of the most beautiful villages in France. Arrival in Cabourg, a Belle Époque seaside resort with 4 km of fine sandy beach.
Day 5: a ride through the Pays d’Auge with its horses, cows and apple trees, a gourmet stop in Beaumont-en-Auge (andouillette, cheese, cider), and arrival at the port of Honfleur, a jewel of art and history that inspired the Impressionist painters. Five days that capture the essence of Calvados.

Which D-Day sites are covered by this tour?

The first two days of cycling are entirely devoted to the D-Day beaches. On Day 2, a loop from Bayeux takes you to the American cemetery at Colleville-sur-Mer, Omaha Beach, and, as an optional extension, Pointe du Hoc. On Day 3, the route to Caen passes through the Longues-sur-Mer battery, the artificial harbour at Arromanches (Gold Beach) and Juno Beach at Courseulles-sur-Mer. These are the four most iconic sites of the Western Allied sector, visited in a logical geographical order before heading towards the Côte Fleurie and the Pays d’Auge for the second half of the trip.

Can we go for a swim during the trip?

Yes, on several occasions. On Day 2, the vast sandy beaches of Omaha Beach are accessible. On Day 3, Gold Beach and Juno Beach offer beautiful stretches of sand. But it is on Day 4 in particular that a swim really comes into its own: Cabourg and its 4 km of fine sandy beach, made famous by Marcel Proust, provide the ideal seaside setting for a late afternoon with your feet in the sand. As the itinerary is flexible, you’ll always have free time to enjoy the sea.

What Normandy specialities can we sample along the way?

This route takes you through the gastronomic heart of Calvados. Bayeux kicks off the trip with its top-quality restaurants. The Pays d’Auge, which you’ll pass through on Day 5, is the birthplace of artisanal cider, Calvados and Normandy cheeses (Camembert, Livarot, Pont-l’Évêque). In Beaumont-en-Auge, a stop is a must to sample andouillette and cheese washed down with cider. Honfleur offers its seafood restaurants and crêperies overlooking the Vieux Bassin. And all along the route, the apple orchards remind you that you are in the heart of cider country. Every stage is a gourmet stop.

This tour offers three levels of accommodation: what is the difference?

It is the only holiday in the catalogue to offer three categories. The Standard package (from €670) offers family-run 2- or 3-star hotels: Le Saint Patrice in Bayeux, the Hôtel Les Quatrans in Caen, the Villa Les Mots Passants in Cabourg and the Hôtel du Dauphin in Honfleur. It’s the same cycling adventure, set against a backdrop ranging from cosy comfort to heritage-inspired luxury.

Yes, in the Superior Luxury package. You’ll stay at the Grand Hôtel de Cabourg, a historic monument in the seaside resort, made famous by Marcel Proust who stayed there regularly. The hotel overlooks the beach and the promenade. Arriving by bike after a day in the Pays d’Auge or along the coast, parking your bike and stepping into this Belle Époque palace facing the sea is an experience that combines physical exertion with an exceptional reward. It is the only opportunity in the entire Normandie Rando catalogue to stay in a 5-star hotel.

How do the luggage and guiding arrangements work?

Normandie Rando transfers your luggage between each stage. You’ll find it in your room every evening. The only day you stay at the same hotel is Day 2 (a loop starting from Bayeux), which simplifies logistics at the start of your trip. A comprehensive route book with mapped routes, GPX tracks and a mobile navigation app will guide you along each route and distance option. Every hire bike comes with a helmet, a full repair kit, lights and a lock. A helpline is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

How do I get to Bayeux and leave from Honfleur?

Bayeux is accessible by direct train from Paris Saint-Lazare in approximately 2 hours 20 minutes. Your hotel is a 15-minute walk from the station. Free public parking is available if you are travelling by car. On your return journey from Honfleur, a bus, taxi or private transfer will take you to Trouville/Deauville station (train to Paris in 2 hours) or Lisieux station (train to Paris in 1 hour 30 minutes). If you need to collect your car in Bayeux, a Lisieux-Bayeux train is available in around 1 hour. A private transfer from Honfleur to Bayeux is also available on request.

What does the €670 per person rate for the Standard package include?

The price includes 5 nights’ accommodation in a hotel with breakfasts featuring fresh, local produce, daily luggage transfer between each stage, a comprehensive road book with mapped routes, GPX tracks for the 4 days of cycling, access to the mobile navigation app and 24-hour telephone support. On a per-night basis, this works out at around €134 per person all-inclusive: accommodation, breakfast, luggage logistics, guiding and assistance. For a 6-day trip covering the D-Day beaches, Caen, Cabourg, the Pays d’Auge and Honfleur, this represents remarkable value for money.

Are there any discounts or options to suit your budget?

For groups of 4 or more, a discount of €40 per person applies. If you prefer to carry your own luggage, a discount of €90 per person is available (cannot be combined with the group discount). Bike hire is available at €120 (hybrid bike), €190 (electric bike) or €190 (road bike) for 4 days, with delivery to Bayeux and collection in Honfleur.

Can we visit the Bayeux Tapestry on Day 1?

The Bayeux Tapestry Museum is currently closed for renovation work, with a reopening scheduled for October 2027. Bayeux remains, however, a fascinating town to explore on the first evening: its Gothic cathedral, its medieval historic centre spared from bombing, its lively narrow streets and its many gourmet restaurants make it the perfect destination to immerse yourself in the Normandy atmosphere.
