At the Gates of the Marshes

The cycle tour begins in Carentan, in the heart of the splendid Cotentin marshes, a luminous landscape of wet meadows and canals where you immediately feel the rural soul of Normandy. The route, ideal for a cycling holiday, leads to Saint-Vaast-la-Hougue, a charming port listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Between the gentle seafront, Vauban’s fortifications and the ferry to Tatihou Island, this first stage charms visitors with its maritime atmosphere, oyster farming culture and discreet elegance: a true Normandy holiday setting.

On the coast of marine lights

The road then runs along an authentic coastline dotted with oyster beds, small coves and typical villages such as Barfleur, a real picture postcard with its granite houses facing the sea. The majestic Gatteville lighthouse, one of the tallest in Europe, offers a spectacular landmark for travellers. Upon arriving in Cherbourg, visitors discover the beauty of its gigantic harbour protected by immense sea walls, before diving into the maritime world of the Cité de la Mer, an unmissable attraction combining aquariums, submarines and tales of ocean exploration. This stop perfectly combines nature, heritage and holiday spirit.

The Land that Defies the Ocean

In La Hague, the scenery becomes grandiose, almost wild: a paradise for travellers in search of spectacular landscapes. The moorland-covered plateaus, the vertiginous cliffs of Nez de Jobourg, the hidden coves and the powerful west wind combine to create a scene of rare intensity. Here you will also find the tiny port of Racine, considered the smallest in France, and the house of Jacques Prévert, testimony to the deep connection between this region and poetry. Every turn reveals a breathtaking panorama, offering one of the most beautiful cycling experiences in the Cotentin.

Golden beaches and secret hedgerows

As you descend towards the large beaches, the cycle ride becomes gentler. In Carteret, an elegant seaside resort, holidaymakers enjoy long stretches of sand, colourful beach huts and the splendid Cap de Carteret, whose viewpoint sometimes takes in the Channel Islands. The dunes of Hatainville complete this idyllic seaside setting.

Back to basics

The cycle route then continues inland, through the Normandy countryside. This consists of a network of small roads that are ideal for a peaceful and leisurely ride. The route passes through hamlets, ponds, ancient hedgerows, meadows and the unmissable Douve valley.
The arrival in Carentan completes an adventure that takes in the sea, wind, hills and marshes.

Itinerary

DAY 1 : Arrival to Carentan

Carentan, nestled in the heart of the Cotentin and Bessin marshes, charms visitors with its canals and lively marina. Steeped in the history of the D-Day landings, the town offers museums and memorials to explore.

Night in Carentan.

DAY 2 : From Carentan to Saint Vaast la Hougue

Distance to cover: 46km (28,5 miles)

Between Carentan and Saint-Vaast-la-Hougue, the landscape alternates between marshes, hedgerows and vast agricultural expanses typical of the Cotentin. Quiet roads lead to charming villages dotted with ancient churches and discreet manor houses. The coast gradually reveals itself, with its unspoilt beaches and natural harbours where you can encounter fishermen and migratory birds. As you approach Saint-Vaast, the horizon opens up onto the sea and the island of Tatihou.

Night in Saint Vaast la Hougue or in Réville.

DAY 3 : From Saint Vaast la Hougue to Cherbourg

Distance to cover: 47km (29 miles)

Between Saint-Vaast-la-Hougue and Cherbourg, the road runs along a wild and unspoilt coastline, dotted with rocky headlands and hidden coves. You will pass through Barfleur, a charming fishing port built of granite, listed as one of the most beautiful villages in France.Further on, the imposing Gatteville lighthouse, one of the tallest in Europe, has been watching over sailors for centuries. The seascapes unfold, combining cliffs, moors and windswept beaches. As you approach Cherbourg, the view opens up onto one of the largest artificial harbours in the world, a truly spectacular arrival.

Night in Cherbourg.

DAY 4 : From Cherbourg to Pointe de la Hague

Distance to cover: 35km (21,7 miles)

This short stage will allow you to discover a little more of Cherbourg: the opera district, the covered market, the fishing port and, of course, La Cité de la Mer in the former transatlantic terminal. It was from here that the Titanic set sail on its final voyage in 1912.
Half a day’s cycling should be enough to reach the north-western tip of the Cotentin and Cap de la Hague. The Millet Museum, Prévert’s house, the port of Omonville-la-Rogue and Port Racine are all on your route.

Night in Pointe de la Hague.

DAY 5 : From Pointe de la Hague to Carteret

Distance to cover: 52km (32,3 miles)

Today, you will follow the coastal road, which offers breathtaking views of the Channel Islands. Starting from Goury lighthouse, you will follow the wild coastline southwards: Ecalgrain Bay, Nez de Jobourg, one of the highest cliffs in Europe, Anse de Vauville and its castle, the dunes of Biville, Cap de Rozel and finally the dune massif of Hattainville before arriving at the port of Barneville.

Night in Carteret.

DAY 6 : From Carteret to Carentan

Distance to cover: 48 or 60km ( 29,8 or 37,2 miles)

Further south, you will want to linger in the small town of Porbail, at least long enough to enjoy a coffee at the harbour. You will then discover the typical ports of western Cotentin, where rivers flow into the sea, the grass is salty and sheep graze peacefully. You will then leave the coast to discover the magnificent bocage landscape of La Manche, a land of livestock farming. Lessay has long been known in rural circles as the most important livestock market in the region. The last fifteen kilometres of your journey will take you along small roads dotted with farms, streams, green pastures and isolated hamlets. Far from the beaten track, in a truly authentic atmosphere.
