D-Day walk

une aventure humaine et passionnée

Arromanches
Bayeux
5 days / 4 nights
Easy
From march to november

On 6 June 1944, the beaches of Normandy were the scene of one of the fiercest battles in history. The landing of the American army, supported by a detachment of Allied soldiers, under a terrible deluge of fire and blood, led to the liberation of France from Nazi rule. This historic walking tour will allow you to follow in the footsteps of the battle and see the remnants of the war for yourself.

In the thick of battle

Starting point for your walk in Normandy: Arromanches, Gold Beach.

A visit to the D-Day Museum sets the tone and gives the walk a sense of remembrance and discovery. An artificial harbour was built here to serve as a supply ramp for Allied troops. You can admire the remains of the harbour, visible at low tide, which illustrate the logistical and engineering challenges involved in the D-Day landings.

This hike will take you to the German battery at Longues-sur-Mer. Overlooking the sea, it is an impressive reminder of the Atlantic Wall, with its original guns still in place. You will continue westwards until you reach the fishing port of Port-en-Bessin, then Colleville-sur-Mer. The town owes its reputation to Omaha Beach and the American cemetery where nearly 10,000 GIs who died in Normandy are buried.

Between Port-en-Bessin and Bayeux, the route crosses a bocage countryside dotted with beautiful stone farms and charming hamlets typical of the Bessin region.

You will end your hike in Bayeux. On the itinerary: the British cemetery, the Commonwealth War Graves Commission memorial and, finally, the famous 70-metre-long tapestry, considered to be the first comic strip in history.
(The Bayeux Tapestry Museum is currently closed for renovation for two years. It is scheduled to reopen in October 2027).

Contemplative escape

The theme of this walking tour is remembrance, honouring the soldiers who died for our freedom. However, from Arromanches to Bayeux, this walking tour in Normandy is anything but sombre. The call of the open sea combined with the invigorating sea air, far from urban pollution, is conducive to contemplative relaxation and escape.

Not to mention the gourmet stops: with seafood, distinctive cheeses and apple-based delicacies, Normandy’s gastronomy celebrates the products of an exceptional terroir.

FAQ

Do you need to be an experienced hiker to do this walk along the D-Day beaches?

Not at all. This trip is classified as ‘leisurely walking’, the most accessible level in the Normandie Rando catalogue. The distances are very short: 12.8 km on Day 2 (Arromanches to Port-en-Bessin), a 22 km loop on Day 3, and 17 km on Day 4 (Port-en-Bessin to Bayeux). These are walks of 3 to 5 hours a day, which leaves plenty of time for sightseeing, reflection and breaks. On Day 3, if the 22 km loop to Omaha Beach seems too long, a taxi can be booked the day before to halve the distance. The terrain alternates between coastal paths along the cliffs, sandy beaches and country lanes through the Bessin countryside. If you are able to walk for 3 to 4 hours at your own pace, this trip is for you.

Why choose walking over cycling to explore the D-Day beaches?

Walking offers a connection to the terrain that cycling cannot provide. You set foot on the sand of Omaha Beach, exactly where the soldiers landed. You climb the cliffs above the Longues-sur-Mer battery, feeling the sea breeze on your face. You walk through the American cemetery at Colleville-sur-Mer at a leisurely pace, in silence, between the rows of white crosses. On foot, the pace slows, the senses are heightened, and there is time for emotion to sink in. The very short distances (12.8 to 22 km per day) leave time for visits, moments of reflection and contemplating the landscape. It is the most intimate and moving way to experience the D-Day sites.

Which major D-Day sites are covered in a 3-day walk?

The route covers the most iconic sites of the Anglo-American sector. Day 1: arrival in Arromanches, Gold Beach, the remains of the Mulberry artificial harbour visible at low tide, and the D-Day Museum. Day 2: the coastal cliffs above Gold Beach, the German battery at Longues-sur-Mer with its bunkers and original guns still in place (the only site on the Atlantic Wall to have preserved them), and the fishing port of Port-en-Bessin. Day 3: a loop to Omaha Beach and the American cemetery at Colleville-sur-Mer, where nearly 10,000 soldiers who died in Normandy are buried. Day 4: the wooded countryside of the Bessin region with its stone farmhouses and typical hamlets, the British cemetery at Bayeux, the Commonwealth Memorial, and medieval Bayeux with its cathedral. Three days of walking that cover the essence of the history of 6 June 1944, on foot, at a contemplative pace.

What are the highlights of each stage?

Day 1: arrival in Arromanches, relaxation on Gold Beach, the spectacular ruins of the Mulberry artificial harbour visible from the beach and the cliffs, a visit to the D-Day Museum dedicated to the design of this harbour, a true feat of military engineering.
Day 2: walk along the coastal cliffs from Gold Beach, the Longues-sur-Mer battery and its impressive bunkers overlooking the sea with their intact guns, descent to the charming fishing port of Port-en-Bessin (12.8 km).
Day 3: loop westwards to Colleville-sur-Mer, between sky and sea, the white crosses of the American cemetery lined up facing the vastness of the English Channel, a moment of striking peace (22 km, option to shorten the route by taxi).
Day 4: a walk through the Bessin countryside with its orchards, pastures and Norman stone farmhouses, the British cemetery and the Commonwealth Memorial in Bayeux, then the medieval town with its cathedral (17 km). Four days amongst cliffs, beaches, remembrance and the Normandy countryside.

Is the American cemetery at Colleville-sur-Mer part of the route?

Yes, it is the most memorable part of Day 3. The 22 km loop from Port-en-Bessin takes you westwards to Colleville-sur-Mer and Omaha Beach. The American cemetery is the final resting place of nearly 10,000 soldiers who fell during the D-Day landings and the fighting that followed. Arriving on foot, after walking along the coast between sky and sea, lends a depth of feeling to the moment of reflection that cannot be matched by arriving by car or bus. The perfectly aligned white crosses overlook the beach and face the English Channel. The silence and beauty of the site offer a poignant contrast to the violence of the fighting that took place there. It is the sort of moment that alone justifies the choice to walk.

This holiday offers three levels of accommodation: what is the difference?

This is one of the few trips in the catalogue to offer three categories. The Standard package (from €505) features 2- or 3-star family-run hotels: Le Mulberry or L’Idéal in Arromanches, the 6.3 Resto Home or the Ibis in Port-en-Bessin, and Le Saint Patrice in Bayeux. The Comfort package (from €635) moves up to 3-star accommodation with character: D-Day Aviator (guest house) or La Marine in Arromanches, the Ibis with harbour view in Port-en-Bessin, and the Hôtel d’Argouges or Le Bayeux in Bayeux. The Superior Luxury package (from €1,220) offers an exceptional experience: Les Villas d’Arromanches (4-star), the Château de La Chenevière (5-star) in Port-en-Bessin, and Villa Lara (5-star) in Bayeux. It’s the same walk, the same emotion, the same history, in a setting ranging from cosy comfort to heritage-inspired luxury.

Is the 5-star Château de La Chenevière part of the route?

Yes, in the Superior Luxury package. You’ll spend two nights at the Château de La Chenevière in Port-en-Bessin, an 18th-century estate surrounded by grounds, rated 5 stars. After a day’s walk along the cliffs or a loop to the American cemetery at Colleville-sur-Mer, returning to this château-hotel is an experience that blends the emotional intensity of D-Day with the luxury of exceptional accommodation. La Villa Lara, a 5-star hotel in Bayeux, rounds off the stay in the same vein. This is the only opportunity in the catalogue to experience the D-Day beaches on foot whilst staying in two 5-star hotels.

Can the Day 3 loop to Omaha Beach be shortened?

Yes. Day 3 features a 22 km loop from Port-en-Bessin to Omaha Beach and the American cemetery, which is the longest stage of the trip. If this distance seems too long, Normandie Rando suggests calling a taxi the day before to drop you off further along the route, halving the distance. This way, you can enjoy the American cemetery and Omaha Beach without the effort of the full walk. This flexibility is a major advantage of the format: you can tailor each day to your fitness level and what you wish to see.

What Normandy specialities can you sample along the way?

The route passes through the heart of the Bessin, an exceptional region of Normandy. Port-en-Bessin is a working fishing port that supplies fresh fish and seafood to the village’s restaurants. The Bessin countryside (Day 4) offers dairy products (butter, cream, cheeses), apple orchards (cider, calvados) and apple-based treats. Arromanches and Bayeux have numerous restaurants where Normandy cuisine takes centre stage. Culinary stops punctuate the walking days and turn every break into a moment of pleasure.

How does the luggage logistics work?

Normandie Rando transfers your luggage between each stage. You walk light, carrying just a small rucksack for water, sun cream and your essentials for the day. You’ll spend two nights in Port-en-Bessin (Days 2 and 3), which simplifies logistics as only two luggage transfers are required (from Arromanches to Port-en-Bessin, and from Port-en-Bessin to Bayeux). A route book with mapped routes, GPX tracks and a mobile navigation app will guide you on each stage. Detailed route descriptions and advice from the team round off the package.

How do I get to Arromanches and leave from Bayeux?

Bayeux is accessible by direct train from Paris Saint-Lazare in around 2 hours 20 minutes. From Bayeux station, a bus or taxi will take you to Arromanches in around 20 minutes (10 km). Free public parking is available in Arromanches if you are travelling by car. On the return journey, the direct train from Bayeux to Paris takes around 2 hours 20 minutes. If you need to collect your car in Arromanches, a bus or taxi from Bayeux takes 20 minutes. The proximity between the two towns makes logistics considerably easier.

What does the €505 per person rate for the Standard package include?

The price includes 4 nights’ accommodation in a hotel with breakfasts featuring fresh, local produce, luggage transfer between each stage, a comprehensive roadbook with mapped routes and detailed advice, GPX tracks, access to the mobile navigation app and personalised explanations of the route. On a per-night basis, this works out at around €126 per person all-inclusive: accommodation, breakfast, luggage logistics and guidance. For a 5-day trip covering Gold Beach, the Longues-sur-Mer battery, Omaha Beach, the American cemetery and Bayeux, all on foot in an accessible format, this is a remarkably well-managed budget.

Can we visit the Bayeux Tapestry on Day 4?

The Bayeux Tapestry Museum is currently closed for renovation work, with a reopening scheduled for October 2027. Bayeux remains, however, a fascinating town to explore after your arrival on Day 4: its Gothic cathedral, its medieval historic centre spared from the bombings, the British cemetery, the Commonwealth Memorial and its lively narrow streets lined with numerous restaurants make for a rich and rewarding final stop.

Are there any discounts available?

For groups of 4 or more, a discount of €20 per person applies. If you prefer to carry your own luggage, a discount of €30 per person is available (cannot be combined with the group discount). Departures are available every day, offering maximum flexibility. The high season supplement applies to the months of June and September only (€30 to €60 depending on the accommodation category).

When is the best time for this hike along the D-Day beaches?

The tour runs from March to November, with daily departures. Spring (April–May) offers soft light on the beaches and cliffs, moderate visitor numbers at the memorial sites and ideal walking conditions. June is an emotionally charged month with the D-Day commemorations around 6 June. Summer allows you to combine historical visits with relaxation on the beaches. Autumn brings a contemplative atmosphere perfectly suited to reflection. Accommodation in this highly sought-after area fills up quickly, particularly the 5-star options in the Luxury package. Booking in advance is strongly recommended.

How do I book this hike along the D-Day beaches?

Fill in a quote request directly on the holiday page. The Normandie Rando team will contact you to personalise your tour: choice of three accommodation options (Standard, Comfort or Superior Luxury), departure dates, a taxi to shorten the Day 3 loop, an extra night in Bayeux and any other options. You can also call 02 31 65 74 08 for a personalised discussion. The quote request is free and without obligation. This is the most intimate way to experience the D-Day beaches: on foot, at a contemplative pace, amongst the cliffs, sandy beaches and the Bessin countryside.
