From the Flowery coast to the landing beaches

une aventure humaine et passionnée

Deauville / Trouville
Bayeux
8 days / 7 nights
Easy
de février à novembre

Located less than two and a half hours from Paris, in the heart of Normandy, Calvados is a department that boasts an exceptional historical, cultural and gastronomic heritage. This walking tour, ideal for the whole family, allows you to discover the riches and iconic sites of this department, from Deauville to Bayeux!

You will be charmed by the variety of landscapes you encounter, from the seaside resorts of Deauville/Trouville to the D-Day beaches, via the port of Honfleur. Another asset of the region is that you can eat and drink well there! Cider, Calvados, Pont l’Evêque cheese, Camembert, Livarot, Teurgoule, mussels and other seafood! Enough to delight your taste buds after a good day’s walking.

Calvados is also a department with an eventful history:
Viking invasions and the conquest of England in 1066 by William the Conqueror, Duke of Normandy.
The Allied landings on 6 June 1944 and the terrible fighting that followed…

Deauville/Trouville and the Flower Coast

Your arrival in Normandy is at Deauville station, a seaside resort built in the 19th century to welcome the Parisian bourgeoisie in search of sea bathing and a change of scenery. Deauville is striking for its opulent villas, its grand casino and its racecourse. For nearly 50 years, the town has also celebrated American cinema, welcoming numerous stars every September who immortalise their visit on the famous ‘planches’ (boardwalk) that line the sea.

Just opposite, on the other side of the Touques river, you will discover Trouville, its fishing port and fish market, and you can stroll around the many shops and terraces on Rue des Bains! In the evening, Trouville is the ideal place to enjoy seafood specialities in one of the many restaurants in the town centre.

Then, along the coastline towards the Seine estuary, you will travel along the Côte Fleurie, passing through the villages of Villerville and Cricquebœuf and admiring the gardens, orchards and sandy beaches before reaching the port of Honfleur, the second stop on your journey!

Honfleur, cradle of Impressionism

Located on the south bank of the Seine estuary, the picturesque slate-roofed houses of the port of Honfleur inspired many Impressionist artists such as Claude Monet, Gustave Courbet and Eugène Boudin. Honfleur prospered between the 15th and 17th centuries thanks to the triangular trade and served as a base for expeditions to conquer the New World: Canada, the West Indies and Louisiana. As you stroll through its winding streets, you will feel as if you have stepped back in time. The old buildings have lost none of their authenticity, with some dating back to the Hundred Years’ War!

Don’t miss the opportunity to take a detour to the Notre Dame de Grâce chapel, which offers a breathtaking view of Le Havre opposite and the Seine estuary.

In the heart of the landing beaches

The next stage takes you to the D-Day beaches. After a private transfer across the Caen plain, you arrive at Arromanches, on the Gold Beach sector, famous for the remains of its artificial harbour and its museum dedicated to the events of 6 June 1944. You then continue along the cliffs to the fishing port of Port en Bessin, passing the German battery at Longues sur Mer, where the guns used by the German army are still in place.

The next day, starting from Port en Bessin, your route takes you to the village of Colleville sur Mer and Omaha Beach, the sector where American troops suffered the most casualties on D-Day. A visit to the memorial and the beach is a must, before heading to the cemetery where nearly 10,000 American soldiers are now buried, a testament to the fierceness of the fighting on that tragic day.

Your walking tour ends with a crossing of the Bessin countryside to reach Bayeux. Don’t miss a visit to the Tapestry Museum, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It traces the glorious epic of William the Conqueror during the conquest of England in 1066 in the form of embroidery.
(The Bayeux Tapestry Museum is currently closed for renovation for two years. It is scheduled to reopen in October 2027).

The town centre of Bayeux, spared from bombing, is full of medieval buildings, shops and good restaurants, a charming way to end your stay!

Itinerary

DAY 1 – Arrival in Deauville/Trouville

Your accommodation is located in the centre of Deauville or Trouville, just a few minutes’ walk from the railway station.
Make the most of your first evening by taking a lovely stroll along the seafront and enjoying a delicious dinner in one of the many restaurants in the town centre.

Night in Trouville or Deauville.

DAY 2 – Loop around Deauville / Trouville

Distance to cover: 8.8 km (5 miles)

On this first day of hiking, you can stroll at your own pace around the port of Trouville and the seaside resort of Deauville, built in the 19th century. Over the years, its villas, large beach and numerous shops have welcomed the Parisian bourgeoisie seeking the benefits of sea bathing and the mild climate. For nearly fifty years, Deauville has also welcomed stars from around the world every year for the American Film Festival.

Night in Trouville or Deauville.

DAY 3 – From Trouville to Honfleur

Distance to cover: 12 or 18 km (7,5 or 11,2 miles)

Today you leave Trouville and head towards the Seine estuary and Honfleur. You travel along the Côte Fleurie (Flower Coast) on small, undulating roads, discovering the charming fishing village of Villerville along the way, where the famous film Un singe en hiver (A Monkey in Winter) was filmed. Further on lies Cricquebœuf, from the Scandinavian names ‘Criach’ and “Buhd” meaning shelter, literally ‘Criach’s shelter’, proof of the existence of the commune in Viking times.
You will end your hike through the woods of Le Breuil. The woods are filled with rhododendrons, which offer a magnificent spectacle in spring. Continue on your way to finally reach the magnificent port of Honfleur.
Your hotel is located in the town centre, a stone’s throw from the old port basin.

Night in Honfleur.

DAY 4 – Loop around Honfleur

Distance to cover: City loop or 19 km loop (11,8 miles)

Continue your exploration of the Côte Fleurie by climbing the Côte de Grâce, where you can admire the superb view of the estuary. At the top of this hill is the old Notre Dame de Grâce chapel, which protects all sailors and fishermen. Once a year, the inhabitants climb the hill for a celebration in the chapel. This tradition, which dates back several hundred years, is still alive today. Further west, you cross the Breuil woods again, populated by oak and beech trees, before reaching the village of Pennedepie. The trail leads you to a farm specialising in the production of cider, pommeau and calvados. Tasting is of course recommended! After the village of Barneville la Bertran, you cross farmland before descending to Honfleur.
Honfleur is not a town like any other… If you prefer to stroll around and take the time to discover the port, its narrow streets with buildings some of which date back to the Hundred Years’ War, its museums, art galleries and hidden gardens, we offer several short tours of the town.

Night in Honfleur.

DAY 5 – From Arromanches to Port en Bessin

Distance to cover: 14 km (8,7 miles)

The day begins with a 90-minute private transfer to the D-Day beaches. Your hike starts on the heights of Arromanches, where you will have a remarkable view of the remains of the Artificial Harbour, still clearly visible at low tide.
Don’t miss a visit to the D-Day Museum, which is very comprehensive and provides all the information you need to understand the events that took place during the Battle of Normandy in 1944.
Continue westwards along Gold Beach and climb up the cliffs overlooking the sea. Along the way, you will find the German battery at Longue-sur-Mer, an impressive group of bunkers at the top of the cliff. A few kilometres further on, you will reach the fishing port of Port-en-Bessin, where your hotel is located.

Night in Port en Bessin.

DAY 6 – Loop around Port en Bessin (Omaha Beach)

Distance to cover: 22 km (13,7 miles)

Today, head west to reach Colleville-sur-Mer. This is where the eastern end of Omaha Beach is located, the scene of one of the bloodiest battles of Operation Overlord. After a visit to the visitor centre, you can explore the impressive American Cemetery, where more than 10,000 soldiers are buried.
You will then return to Port en Bessin by the same route, but the light changes with the tides and the path is never monotonous.
If the distance seems too long, you can always call a taxi the day before to halve the distance.

Night in Port en Bessin.

DAY 7 – From Port en Bessin to Bayeux

Distance to cover: 17 km (10,5 miles)

You leave the coast behind to reach the Aure Valley and then Tour-en-Bessin. You will enjoy the magnificent manor houses and stud farms along the way, evidence of the prosperity of the Bessin region of Normandy.
You arrive in Bayeux via the British cemetery and the Commonwealth Memorial. The cathedral will be your landmark for finding your hotel in the extremely well-preserved centre of the town of Bayeux. We highly recommend visiting the tapestry, a historical testimony to the Norman epic of William the Conqueror.
(The Bayeux Tapestry Museum is currently closed for renovation for two years. It is scheduled to reopen in October 2027).

For dinner, the town has many excellent restaurants to choose from.

Night in Bayeux.

FAQ

Do you need to be an experienced hiker to complete this 8-day walking tour?

Not at all. This trip is classified as ‘leisurely walking’, the most accessible level in the Normandie Rando catalogue. The daily distances are very short: 8.8 km on Day 2 (Deauville/Trouville loop), 12 or 18 km on Day 3 (Trouville to Honfleur), 19 km loop on Day 4 (around Honfleur), 14 km on Day 5 (Arromanches to Port-en-Bessin), 22 km loop on Day 6 (towards Omaha Beach), and 17 km on Day 7 (Port-en-Bessin to Bayeux). These are walks of 2 to 5 hours a day, leaving plenty of time for sightseeing, gourmet breaks and contemplation. On Day 6, if the 22 km loop towards Omaha Beach seems too long, a taxi can be booked the day before to halve the distance. The terrain alternates between coastal paths, wooded trails and wooded countryside, with no technical difficulty.

How does this tour differ from the 5-day ‘D-Day Beaches on Foot’ hike?

Both tours cover the same D-Day sites (Arromanches, Longues-sur-Mer battery, Omaha Beach, American cemetery, Port-en-Bessin, Bayeux). The main difference lies in the first three days: this tour starts in Deauville/Trouville and includes the entire Côte Fleurie and Honfleur before reaching the D-Day beaches. You’ll spend two nights in Deauville/Trouville (a Belle Époque seaside resort with a promenade and seafood restaurants) and two nights in Honfleur (an Impressionist port with medieval streets and the Notre-Dame de Grâce chapel). A private transfer, included in the price, will then take you from Honfleur to Arromanches for the D-Day section. If you want to combine seaside elegance, Impressionist art and the memory of the D-Day landings in a single walking tour, this is the tour for you. If you wish to focus solely on the D-Day beaches, the short version at €505 is the right choice.

What are the highlights of each stage?

Day 1: arrival in Deauville or Trouville, a stroll along the seafront, first dinner overlooking Trouville harbour.
Day 2: a gentle 8.8 km loop between Trouville (fishing harbour, fishmongers, shops) and Deauville (villas, casino, the boardwalk of the American Film Festival).
Day 3: the Côte Fleurie on foot via Villerville (fishing village where ‘Un singe en hiver’ was filmed), Cricquebœuf (a hamlet of Viking origin), the Breuil woods and their rhododendrons, arriving at Honfleur harbour.
Day 4: a loop around Honfleur taking in the Côte de Grâce and the view over the Seine estuary, the Notre-Dame de Grâce chapel, the oak and beech woods, a cider farm with tasting, and the medieval streets of Honfleur.
Day 5: private transfer to the D-Day beaches, arrival on the heights of Arromanches with views of the remains of the Mulberry artificial harbour, visit to the D-Day Museum, walk along Gold Beach, the Longues-sur-Mer battery and its intact guns, arrival in Port-en-Bessin.
Day 6: loop to Omaha Beach and the American cemetery at Colleville-sur-Mer with its thousands of white crosses facing the sea.
Day 7: journey through the Bessin countryside with its manor houses and stud farms, the British cemetery, the Commonwealth Memorial, arrival in Bayeux and its cathedral. Seven days between the boardwalk of Deauville and the crosses of Omaha, between the art of living and remembrance.

Is the transfer between Honfleur and Arromanches included in the price?

Yes. A private transfer of approximately 1½ hours is included on Day 5 to take you from Honfleur to the D-Day beaches. This is necessary as the two areas (the Côte Fleurie and the D-Day beaches) are not directly linked by a footpath that can be covered in a single day. The private transfer drops you off on the heights of Arromanches, where you begin your hike with a spectacular view of the remains of the artificial harbour. You lose no walking days: Day 5 includes both the transfer and a 14 km coastal hike to Port-en-Bessin. This is the most elegant way to combine these two worlds into a single trip.

This holiday offers three levels of accommodation: what’s the difference?

This is one of the most luxurious tours in the catalogue thanks to its Superior Luxury package. The Standard package (from €970) offers well-located 2- or 3-star family-run hotels. The Comfort package (from €1,150) upgrades to 3- and 4-star hotels, including the Hostellerie du Vallon in Trouville, Le Cheval Blanc in Honfleur, the Ibis Vue Port in Port-en-Bessin and the Hôtel d’Argouges in Bayeux. The Superior Luxury package (from €2,150) offers an exceptional experience across four iconic establishments: the 5-star Le Normandy in Deauville (a legendary luxury hotel), the 4-star Les Maisons de Léa in Honfleur (charming Norman houses), the 5-star Château de La Chenevière in Port-en-Bessin (an 18th-century estate set in grounds), and the 5-star Villa Lara in Bayeux. Four exceptional properties, four distinct atmospheres, one trip.

Are Le Normandy in Deauville and the Château de La Chenevière part of the itinerary?

Yes, in the Superior Luxury package. You’ll spend two nights at Le Normandy, Deauville’s iconic luxury hotel, whose half-timbered silhouette has dominated the beach for over a century. After two days of walking along the Côte Fleurie and two nights at Les Maisons de Léa in Honfleur, the transfer to the D-Day beaches takes you to Château de La Chenevière in Port-en-Bessin, an 18th-century estate nestled in a park and rated 5-star. Villa Lara, a 5-star property in Bayeux, brings the trip to a close. The contrast between the seaside elegance of Deauville, the artistic charm of Honfleur, the poignancy of the D-Day beaches and the luxury of a Norman château gives this holiday a dimension that few walking tours in the world can offer.

What Norman specialities can you sample along the route?

This tour passes through the gastronomic heart of Calvados. In Trouville (Days 1 and 2), the fishing harbour provides mussels, prawns and fresh fish. In Honfleur (Days 3 and 4), the restaurants in the Vieux Bassin offer seafood and Norman cuisine, and the loop on Day 4 takes in a cider farm with tastings of cider, pommeau and calvados. Normandy cheeses are everywhere: Pont-l’Évêque, Camembert, Livarot. Port-en-Bessin (Days 5 and 6) is a working fishing port with fresh fish and seafood. And Bayeux (Day 7) is brimming with excellent restaurants. Teurgoule, a traditional Normandy dessert, completes the picture. Seven days of walking, seven days of culinary delights.

Can we go swimming during the trip?

Yes, on several occasions. Deauville and Trouville (Days 1 and 2) offer large beaches of fine sand. The Côte Fleurie between Trouville and Honfleur (Day 3) runs alongside accessible beaches. Gold Beach in Arromanches (Day 5) and Omaha Beach (Day 6) are vast stretches of sand. As the walking distances are short (8.8 to 22 km), you will always have free time in the afternoon to enjoy the sea, particularly during the first two seaside days on the Côte Fleurie.

How does the luggage logistics work?

Normandie Rando transfers your luggage between each stage, including during the transfer between Honfleur and Arromanches on Day 5. You walk light with a small rucksack. GPX tracks and a mobile navigation app guide you on each stage. Detailed route descriptions and advice from the team complete the package. You’ll spend two nights in Deauville/Trouville (Days 1 and 2), two nights in Honfleur (Days 3 and 4) and two nights in Port-en-Bessin (Days 5 and 6), which reduces the number of luggage transfers and simplifies logistics.

How do I get to Deauville and leave from Bayeux?

Deauville is accessible by train from Paris Saint-Lazare in around 2 hours 40 minutes. Your accommodation is a few minutes’ walk from the station. Free parking is available on Trouville beach. On the return journey, the direct train from Bayeux to Paris takes around 2 hours 20 minutes. If you need to collect your car in Deauville, the Bayeux-Deauville train journey (via Caen and Lisieux) takes approximately 1 hour 30 minutes to 2 hours 30 minutes, depending on connections. A private transfer is also available on request.

What does the €970 per person rate for the Standard package include?

The price includes 7 nights’ accommodation in hotels with breakfasts featuring fresh, local produce, the private transfer between Honfleur and Arromanches on Day 5, daily luggage transfers between each stage, GPX tracks, access to the mobile navigation app and detailed route descriptions with tips. On a per-night basis, this works out at around €139 per person all-inclusive: accommodation, breakfast, private transfer, luggage logistics and guidance. For an 8-day trip combining Deauville, Honfleur, the D-Day beaches and Bayeux, with a private transfer included, this is a price that reflects the richness of the experience.

Are there any discounts available?

For groups of 4 or more, a discount of €50 per person applies. If you prefer to carry your own luggage, a discount of €40 per person is available (cannot be combined with the group discount). Departures are scheduled for Mondays (€60 surcharge for any other day). The high season runs from 1 June to 31 August (supplement of €30 to €60 depending on the accommodation category). This tour is available from February to November, the longest season in the catalogue.

Can we visit the Bayeux Tapestry on Day 7?

The Bayeux Tapestry Museum is currently closed for renovation work, with a reopening scheduled for October 2027. Bayeux remains, however, a fascinating town to explore on the final day: its Gothic cathedral, its medieval historic centre spared from bombing, the British cemetery, the Commonwealth Memorial and its many gourmet restaurants make for a rich and satisfying final stop.

When is the best time for this hike from Deauville to Bayeux?

The trip is available from February to November, the longest season in the catalogue. Spring (March–May) offers rhododendrons in bloom in the Breuil woods between Trouville and Honfleur, soft light over the Vieux Bassin and the D-Day beaches, and moderate visitor numbers. Summer allows you to enjoy swimming in Deauville and Trouville. Autumn brings spectacular colours to the Bessin countryside. Accommodation in Honfleur and Deauville fills up quickly during the season, particularly the Superior Luxury options. Booking in advance is strongly recommended.

How do I book this hike from the Côte Fleurie to the D-Day beaches?

Fill in a quote request directly on the holiday page. The Normandie Rando team will contact you to tailor your itinerary: choice of three accommodation options (Standard, Comfort or Superior Luxury), departure dates, a taxi to shorten the loop on Day 6, an extra night in Bayeux or Honfleur, and any other options. You can also call 02 31 65 74 08 for a personalised consultation. The quote request is free and non-binding. It’s the first step towards experiencing Calvados in all its splendour: from the boardwalks of Deauville to the port of Honfleur, from the cliffs of Gold Beach to the white crosses of Omaha, on foot, at a pace that combines pleasure and contemplation.
