A cycling adventure in the heart of the Cotentin

Set off on a unique 5-night, 4-day cycling getaway between Cherbourg and Granville. This route faithfully follows the northern and western coastline of the Cotentin, offering a condensed version of maritime landscapes, history and authenticity. Connecting two iconic ports in the English Channel, the route immerses you in the soul of this region where the sea still dictates the rhythm of life.

Breathtaking seascapes

As the kilometres roll by, cyclists are amazed by the natural diversity. Granite cliffs sculpted by the waves alternate with long white sandy beaches bathed in light. Heather moors colour the hillsides and spread their subtle fragrance, while dunes stretch as far as the eye can see. Each stage reveals a new facet of the Cotentin, between wild power and soothing gentleness.

Coastal villages and living heritage

The route passes through charming fishing villages, whose stone houses bear witness to centuries of history. These villages, sometimes nestled in secluded coves, exude authentic Normandy charm. Along the way, seaside churches and chapels remind us of the unbreakable bond between the inhabitants and the sea. It is a journey where heritage and traditions are discovered at the pace of the pedals.

The tempo of the tides

It is impossible to cycle in the Cotentin without feeling the influence of the tides, which are among the most spectacular in Europe. They sculpt the landscape

A total immersion between two historic ports

Itinerary

Day 1: Arrival in Cherbourg

Your hotel is ideally located on the harbor, a stone’s throw from the city center and close to the train station.

Night in Cherbourg

Day 2: Cherbourg to Pointe de la Hague

Distance to cover: 35km (21,7 miles)

This short stop will give you the opportunity to explore Cherbourg in more depth: the Opera district, the covered market, the fishing port, not to mention the Cité de la Mer, housed in the former transatlantic terminal. At the time, crossings between Paris and New York passed through Cherbourg for embarkation, and it was from this very terminal that the Titanic set sail on its final voyage in 1912.

A half-day bike ride should then be enough to reach the northwestern tip of the Cotentin Peninsula and Cap de la Hague. Along the way, you’ll pass the museum dedicated to the painter Millet, the house of Jacques Prévert, and the charming ports of Omonville-la-Rogue and Port Racine.

Night in Pointe de la Hague.

DAY 3 : From La Hague to Carteret

Distance to cover: 52km (32,3 miles)

Today, we’re off for a day of breathtaking scenery on the Channel Islands!

Starting from Goury Lighthouse, you’ll follow the wild coastline southwards, admiring a succession of wonders: Écalgrain Bay, the spectacular Nez de Jobourg, then Anse de Vauville with its castle, picturesque village and nature reserve. Your journey will continue through the majestic dunes of Biville to Cap de Rozel, before reaching the vast dune massif of Hattainville.
You will end this magnificent day by heading towards the port of Barneville via Cap… What a treat!

Night in Carteret.

DAY 4 : From Carteret to Agon Coutainville

Distance to cover: 52km (32,3 miles)

Further south, the discovery of the small town of Porbail will make you want to stay, at least for a coffee at the harbour. Next, you will discover the typical harbours of western Cotentin, where rivers meet the sea, where the grass is salty and the sheep graze happily. After Carteret, you will visit the harbour of Saint Germain-sur-Ay, then Gelfosses and finally Blainville sur Mer before reaching your destination.

Night in Agon Coutainville

DAY 5 : From Coutainville to Granville

Distance to cover: 44 km (27.5 miles)

Perhaps you’ll take a stroll this morning! The beautiful white sandy beaches, for a coffee or a swim at high tide, or a different world at low tide: that of the sea farmers, the oyster farmers and the tractors that go with them. Indeed, with the sea retreating 2 km or more twice a day, you’ll be dazzled by the spectacle.

You’ll have to get back on your bike for this last stage, but you won’t be disappointed!

After crossing the Sienne and touring the Havre de Régneville, even more charming than the others, you will discover sandy soil, very suitable for market gardening; and there is plenty of it. You will cross the Havre de la Vanlée (the last one) and then follow the pretty beaches of Saint-Martin de Bréhal and Coudeville to arrive at the Pointe du Roc, on which Granville, nicknamed the Monaco of Normandy, is built!
