  • Description
  • The Pays d’Auge Cheese and Cider route is perhaps the prettiest of postcards that Normandy can produce! This area is a small clay plateau with sharpened flints crossed by small rivers that have hollowed out their paths to the sea.
It illustrates the meaning of rurality. Difficult for farming, though farmers have come to terms with it in a remarkable way through its gastronomy and architecture. Our travels will reveal the magnificent half-timbered manor houses, the immaculate stud farms and the picturesque villages. We can suggest numerous visits to farms and cellars to taste the cheeses and ciders, Pommeau and Calvados. The flowering of the apple trees in the Spring and the harvesting in the Autumn creates an explosion of colour.

  • Normandy’s cheese board is of the most impressive in France. The most famous is of course Camembert, but you will also discover Pont-L’Evêque and Livarot.
  • Taste a wide range of apple-based products: cider, pommeau and calvados. If you are adventurous, you will try the “Trou Normand”, a traditional drink made of calvados and apple ice cream.
  • Visit the impressive Basilica in Lisieux, built in honour of the newly canonised saint Thérèse (1925).
  • Spend a night in a norman Manor house close to Beuvron-en-Auge, a typical village recognized as one of the most beautiful in France.
  • Honfleur, especially known for its old, beautiful picturesque port which inspired many impressionist painters like Gustave Courbet, Eugène Boudin or Claude Monet

Bike tour itinerary : Cheese and Cider Route

  • D1
  • Arriving Lisieux
  • 20km optionnal / Bed & Breakfast
    • The capital of the Pays d'Auge, Lisieux was destroyed by the bombs in the summer of '44'.
If the rebuilding after the war is of no particular interest, the Basilica Saint-Thèrese is the second destination for pilgrims after Lourdes.
Your hotel in the centre of town is just yards away from the 'Carmel' and only 500 meters away from the Basilica.

In the case of arriving around mid-day, your bikes will be ready and we will suggest a short ride and a couple of distilleries to visit!

  • D2
  • Lisieux to Beuvron en Auge
  • 40km / Bed & Breakfast
    • You will follow the river Touques for roughly 10kms before veering off to the west and the market town of Cambremer. The high spot of the ' Appellation d'Origine Contrôlée', Cambremer cannot be ignored.
After visiting the magnificent castle at Crêvecoeur you continue your way along the "Cider path", until you get to Beuvron-en-Auge.

  • D3
  • Beuvron en Auge to Honfleur
  • 41km ou 67km / Bed & Breakfast
    • Today you will go through the Pays d'Auge right to its northern border and the Seine estuary. On the way you will pass the villages of Bonnesbosq and Beaumont-en-Auge. The latter, well known to artists and painters in particular, is an ideal stopping off point. You will then continue your trip in the same direction to the villages Englesqueville and Barneville-la -Bertrand, before descending to Honfleur.
A different route takes you through the seaside resort of Deauville before following the coastal road from Trouville.
