Hiking trip details : Walking the D-Day beaches

On June 6th 1944, the Normandy beaches were the scene of one of the fiercest battles in history. The landing of the American army supported by a detachment of Allied soldiers, under a terrible deluge of fire and blood, allowed the liberation of France from the Nazi yoke. This historical walking tour will allow you to follow the events of the battle and to touch the remains of the war.

At the heart of the battle

Starting point of the walk in Normandy, Arromanches and Gold Beach. A visit to the D-Day Museum sets the tone for the memorial nature of the walk. An artificial harbour was built here to serve as a supply ramp for the Allied troops. You could put yourself in the shoes of the soldiers through the exhibition of their weapons, uniforms, helmets, survival kit...

The next day you arrive at Longues-sur-Mer, where the German cliff top bunker system was established, which was supposed to annihilate any Allied attack. You will progress westwards to the fishing port of Port-en-Bessin and then Colleville-sur-Mer. The town owes its reputation to Omaha Beach, and the American cemetery where nearly 10,000 GI's who died in Normandy are buried.

Then you leave the coast and drive into the Normandy countryside. Here you will discover an impressive panorama of green pastures as far as the eye can see and the singular architecture of the local farms. The image of huge cylindrical haystacks near the windmills will not leave you for long.

The final journey will take you to Bayeux. On the menu of visits: British cemetery, Commonwealth memorial and finally the famous 70-metre long tapestry which is considered to be the first comic strip in history.

A contemplative escape

The meditation that befits the memory of the soldiers who died for our freedom is the main theme of the tour. But from Arromanches to Bayeux, the walking tour in Normandy is anything but sad. The call of the open sea combined with the invigorating sea air far from urban pollution is conducive to contemplative relaxation and escape.

And let's not forget the gourmet stops and the restaurants, which feature a rich gastronomy of cheese specialities, cold meats, wines, seafood... that will delight your taste buds.
