Cycling trip details : D-Day Landing Beaches (5 nights)

The 6th of June 1944 was a turning point in the history of the Second World War, with the landing on the beaches of Calvados of thousands of Allied soldiers who came to liberate Europe from the Nazi yoke. The fighting that took place on that day and during the following months had a profound effect on Normandy.  This cyclo-touristic trip will take you to the key sites of Operation Overlord, from Omaha beach to Arromanches, the Pointe du Hoc and Sainte Mère Eglise! A sporting and commemorative trip that will delight history lovers, and will also allow you to discover the richness of the Normandy landscapes and gastronomy!

From Bayeux to the landing beaches

Bayeux will be the starting point of your cycling adventure in Normandy. Take the opportunity to admire the famous Tapestry and during your first evening, take a walk in the historic heart of the town, the allied quarter after the landing.

The next day, head for the D-Day beaches! The longer route will take you to Juno Beach at Courseulles-sur-Mer, in the Canadian sector, while the shorter option will take you to the remains of the artificial harbour at Arromanches.

After a second night in Bayeux, head west through the Bessin countryside to Colleville-sur-Mer and Omaha Beach.

Cycling in the Normandy Bocage

On the same day, you will cross the famous Normandy bocage, followed by a visit to the German cemetery of La Cambe and a bike ride to Isigny sur Mer where you will spend the night.

The next day you will cycle to Carentan and the Cotentin Marshes Regional Nature Park before arriving in Sainte Marie du Mont where you will spend the night. Your last day of cycling is spent visiting Utah Beach and Sainte Mère Eglise. A longer route takes you to the village of Saint Vaast la Hougue.

Your first cycling day will take you East towards Courseulles and Juno Beach. After a stop at the peaceful Canadian cemetery, you ride westwards along the coast (Gold beach) in order to visit Arromanches with its remarkable artificial harbour (Mulberry) and the German battery of Longues-sur-Mer before returning to Bayeux following the pretty Aure valley.

Overnight in Bayeux.

DAY 2 : Bayeux - Isigny sur Mer
Cycling Distance : 42 km / 60km

You drive through the beautiful Bessin countryside to Omaha Beach and its impressive American cemetery at Colleville-sur-mer. After the Pointe du Hoc, head south passing by the German cemetery at La Cambe before arriving at Isigny where you will spend the night. Isigny is famous for its quality dairy products (butter, cheese...). You can also find very good oysters which are cultivated in the bay of Veys.

DAY 3 : Isigny sur Mer - Utah beach
Cycling distance : 36 km / 70 km

You start your day through the marshes that have made the reputation of Isigny-sur-Mer and Carentan. The milk from the cows gives butter, camembert and caramels a unique taste!

After a break in Carentan, you enter the Cotentin regional park and it is on a very quiet road far from the traffic that you arrive in Sainte Marie du Mont or Sainte mère Eglise where you will spend the night.

Overnight in Sainte Mère Eglise or Sainte Marie du Mont.

DAY 4 : Utah Beach loop
Cycling distance : 35 km / 80 km

You have plenty of time today to visit Utah Beach, Holy Mother Church and the Airborn Museum.
You can also take advantage of the beautiful beaches to go swimming... If you feel like it, you can make a long loop and go up to the pretty fishing village of Saint Vaast la Hougue.
