Dive into World War 2 History during your cycling trip
Your cycling trip starts in Bayeux, where you will visit its famous tapestry, its cathedral and its medieval streets. After picking up your bike, you will head to the seaside to discover the D-Day beaches, starting with Gold Beach (Arromanches-les-Bains) and Juno Beach. The next day, head west where you will ride along the Omaha beaches through the Bessin countryside and the village of Colleville-sur-Mer until you reach the Pointe du Hoc.
Enjoy the Norman bocage and coastline
You will then leave the coast and cross the Parc Naturel des Marais du Cotentin before reaching Carentan. The next day will take you through bocage and small country roads to the west coast and the seaside resort of Agon-Coutainville. On the 5th day, you will follow the coast to Granville, where you can enjoy a nice swim if the weather is good, as well as a visit to the ramparts of the upper town !
Heading towards Mont Saint Michel
On the 6th day, you will leave Granville for an inland cycling tour to Avranches, which overlooks the bay of the Mont. You will ride along the Estranches before passing by the German Ossuary of the Mont d'Huisne to finally reach the Mont-Saint-Michel. After a visit of the abbey and the town, you will finish your bike ride in Normandy by joining Pontorson, a small typical village a few kilometres south of Mont-Saint-Michel.
Experience an unforgettable stay with Normandie Rando
As experts in cycling holidays in Normandy, our cycling travel agency will meet all your expectations by taking care of both bike hire and accommodation. We offer you a perfectly organised cycling holiday of 8 days and 7 nights on the west coast of Normandy.
We offer a variety of bikes, adapted to the roads of the region and equipped with all the necessary accessories to discover Normandy by bike in complete safety.
DAY 1 : Arrival in Bayeux
Take time to visit the medieval city of Bayeux: its incredible Tapestry and Cathedral.
Before dining in one of the town's excellent restaurants, we recommend a walk through the historic heart of the town, which was the Allied quarter after the landings. Bayeux was spared the bombing and still has some beautiful buildings dating from the Middle Ages.
DAY 2 : Bayeux to Bayeux
Distance : 40km / 52km
For this first day's cycling, you will cycle a loop to the north-east of Bayeux for a first encounter with the D-Day landing beaches. The long option takes you to the Canadian sector of Juno beach at Courseulles-sur-Mer. This is also the beach where the Charles de Gaulle landed on 14 June 1944!
You then follow the coast to Gold beach in Arromanches where you take the short option. You will have time to admire the remains of the artificial harbour "Mulberry B" and to take a short break before visiting the bunkers of the German Battery of Longues sur Mer.
You return quietly to Bayeux following the valley of the Aure.
Night in Bayeux.
DAY 3 : Bayeux to Carentan
Distance : 62km / 75km
Leaving Bayeux, drive through the Bessin countryside to the coast at Colleville-sur-Mer. This village at the eastern end of Omaha Beach has been home to the bodies of 9,387 soldiers buried in the American Cemetery since 1956. After your visit, you drive along the Omaha beaches to the west and continue to Pointe du Hoc, where the Rangers stormed the German artillery positions on the cliff top.
You then leave the coast for the famous Bocage Normand, scene of painful fighting between American GIs and German soldiers. After a visit to the German cemetery of La Cambe, you will cross the Natural Park of the Cotentin Marshes before reaching Carentan. Your accommodation is ideally located in the town centre.
Night in Carentan.
DAY 4 : Carentan to Agon-Coutainville
Distance : 52km
Today's programme is a crossing of the marsh on small country roads. The landscape begins to change, with small hills and isolated dairy farms.
After a brief passage through Coutances and its superb cathedral, you head west, south of the river "Sienne". The contrast between the grey granite of the houses and the emerald blue of the sea is striking.
You stay in a family hotel on the coast.
Night in Agon-Coutainville.
DAY 5 : Agon-Coutainville to Granville
Distance : 22km / 66km
Today you can choose between two routes. The short option allows you to enjoy the beach by following the coast to Granville. On very narrow paths, you will see the spectacle of the "farmers of the sea". Men and machines go by at the rhythm of the tides to work in the oyster beds.
The long option takes you into the bocage, passing the old Hambye Abbey before joining the previous route along the coast.
Your hotel is located at the Granville yacht club.
Night in Granville.
DAY 6 : Granville to Avranches
Distance : 48km / 62km
You leave the coast and drive inland, where you will see a hilly landscape until you reach the Lucerne Abbey. You then head south and reach the bay around Saint-Jean-Le-Thomas. Continue to the Cap de Grouin and finally arrive in Avranches.
Your hotel is located in the historic centre of the town.
Night in Avranches, gastronomic dinner included.
DAY 7 : Avranches - Mont-Saint-Michel - Pontorson
Distance : 28km / 38km
The road out of Avranches offers a spectacular view of the bay and the Mont. You go along the foreshore and meet the sheep and lambs of the famous salt meadows. You then pass by the German Ossuary of the Mont d'Huisnes to finally reach the Mont-Saint-Michel. It takes 3 hours to visit this island town and its abbey on foot.
At the end of the day, follow the peaceful Couesnon Canal to reach the small town of Pontorson.
Night in Pontorson.
DAY 8 : Pontorson
End of tour in Pontorson after breakfast.
