Hiking trip details : From Mont Saint Michel to Jersey

With more than 3 million visitors per year, Mont Saint Michel is the third most visited tourist site in France after the Eiffel Tower and the Château de Versailles. Listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the island emerged from anonymity with the establishment of Benedictine monasteries in the 13th century and the construction of the abbey. This masterpiece of Gothic architecture, built on three levels on the mountainside, attracts crowds of pilgrims from all over Europe. Food lovers will be delighted by the local gastronomy: oysters, cider, galettes, salt-meadow lamb...

The seaside walk starts in Pontorson, a village straddling Normandy and Brittany. There, you can follow the river Couesnon on foot through green meadows and polders to find the path that leads to Mont Saint-Michel, the highlight of the walk.

Saint-Michel, on the edge between past and present

In the village, a dozen monks of the Monastic Fraternity of Jerusalem still live there, like a link between the present and the past. A past that is omnipresent in the medieval streets and byways that give any walk a strong historical connotation: the walls, the ramparts of the city, the scriptorial of Avranches, a library with an impressive collection of nearly 4000 religious books. Located in the bay, the eco-museum presents a picture of the geology, as well as the island's fauna and flora. It also presents the human interactions that are harmful to the preservation of the environment.

The thrill of Jersey's cliffs

The other stages of the Normandy walking tour will then take you to Dol-de-Bretagne, Cancale the oyster village, the Pointe du Grouin, Rozel from where you can admire the harbour and the bay below and finally the Baie de Grève de Lecq, the famous beach which invites you to relax.

After the ferry to Saint Malo, the Normandy trip ends with a stay on the island of Jersey. The impressive cliffs that rise around the beach create a strange feeling of being out of time.
